I have a 8 week old boxer puppy that we found out has roundworms. She has been dewormed twice. She has slept in my bed once or twices and I was going to make my bed this morning and I found tons of dried up worms I'm guessing in my bed! They look like dried rice! I am so grossed out but I don't know what to do! I am worried but should I be seriously worried? Help!

Those aren't roundworms, those a tapeworm segments.

The wormers routinely given don't take of tapeworms, you need a different wormer for that. Tell your vet what you found, and they'll give you the wormer.

Tapeworms come from ingestion of infected fleas. So you should also treat your dog and home for fleas as well. This will prevent further tapeworm problems. For you puppy Advantage or Frontline will work well to kill fleas on your dog, and then use monthly as a preventative. For the home you'll want to ask the vet when get your tapeworm dewormer to recommend a good fogger with insect growth regulator (i.g.r.) for your home. Remember you and your pets will need to leave the home for several hours while the fogger works so prepare for that as well.

Roundworms that are expelled are about 3-4 inches long.
Tapeworms come out about 1 1/2-2 inches long and dry up to the size of a grain of rice. They don't show on a fecal test. There is an over the counter drug that is the generic version of Droncit (which vets use for tapeworm). Other wormers will not kill tape. It's called Pranziquantel. You can get it at most larger pet stores for under $20.00. I've used it on rescues and my own so it is safe. Fleas are the cause of tapeworm, so make sure that you have treated for fleas.

If it is rice looking things then they are tapeworms and arent effected by wormer for roundworms. If you had it tested at the vet it may not have shown up on the test. Fecals use a highly salt solution that causes worm eggs to rise to the top and stick to the microscope slide. Tapeworm eggs are denser and dont always float to the top so they are usually diagnosed by the owners seeing them. Go back to the vet and ask for tapeworm meds. That should help. Tapeworms are not contagious to you. They are transmitted by ingesting fleas so you might have a flea problem. Good luck.

If they looked liked dried rice, then they are not round worms! They are tapeworms. That is why the treatment has not helped. You should tell your vet and have them perscribe you a tapeworm pill such as Cestex. This will take care of your problem! Also, dogs can only get tapeworms from fleas that carry the egg, so make sure your puppy is flea free and stays that way! Good luck!

I would NEVER purchase worm medication in a pet store. My dogs are kept on Heartworm medication year round. This medication also prevents all the the other parasites, not just heartworms.

Some people think the dogs only need it Apr. to Nov. Not true. My dogs get a fecal check at least once a year at the vet to make sure there are no worms. To me it is worth the money and knowing my dogs are safe.

Those aren't roundworms, they are tapeworms. Tapeworms are caused by fleas or by eating mice, rats, rabbits or other rodents. Ordinary dewormers don't work on tapeworms. You need to go to your vet and get a dewormer for tapes.
You also need to treat for fleas. Pick up a safe flea product from your vet...do NOT use ANY OTC dewormers of flea products. They are ineffective and can be very dangerous even fatal to your pet.

You can't get tapeworms from your dog.

When pups vomit round worms that is a strong indication that the pup has a very heavy worm burden. This puppy should have been dewormed regularly. She will be ok until you take her to the vet in the morning. These worms developed over time, not just in the last day or two.

Those are tapeworms, just take her to the vet, they'll give you some Cestex and she'll be fine. Don't worry, lots of dogs get them.
