You can use the dram equivalent to determine the velocity of the shell. For example, a shell with 1 1/8 oz of shot and a dram eq of 3 will have a velocity of 1200 fps. That same shell with a dram eq of 2 3/4 will have a velocity of 1145 fps.

Johndeereman nailed it. It's the equivilant of 2 1/2 drams of black powder. When you look at a shotgun shell you will see something like 3 1/2 - 1 1/4 - 6. That means 3 1/2 dram. eq. of powder, 1 1/4 oz. of shot and the 6 is the shot size. Have fun shooting.

Means the shells were inspected by Dr. EQ Just like the tag you pull out of your pants pockets when you first get them.
