No, it was red.
Saint Nicholas (Santa) colors derived from his being a Bishop and wearing a red cloak of a Bishop. Stories of Saint Nicholas ( made a Saint by the Catholic Church) tell about him giving gifts to the poor.
One story has it that he helped a poor man, with three daughters, by giving them each a bag of gold, and that is now symbolized by the three balls at the entrance to pawn shops.
'Santa Claus' is a degeneration of the Dutch word Sinterklaas, among other variations.
In the Netherlands and Belgium,he goes around in a Red Bishops outfit and hands out gifts, as does our Santa Claus or Father Christmas do for our children. A nice tradition..

Yes the people who are mentioning Coca Cola are correct. It was a green suit before that, and go back even further and you will find he used to wear a long gold robe.

St. Nicholas, Father Chritmas etc didn't actually have outfits in their different countries but are characters based on history & folk law. Coke created Santa Claus as we all know his as an advertising campaign ..... damn the power of marketing!

Santa Claus can't have a suit, because he is not real.
Sorry for crushing hopes and wishes.
But it is true.
