maybe the question should be "What use is mankind to the cat?".

Cats don't need us. Not one bit. As a wise person once said when I asked her why cats hang around us, "They just think we're cute."

not everything on the earth is for our benefit, you know.

Are you on this planet? When I lived in Trenton NJ years ago, animal control actually was releasing male cats into rodent infested parts of that city. At the farm where I go for corn and other produce now, they have at least 6 cats at all times in the barns to protect the grain. In my home, they catch all the spiders crickets, and moths, that get inside. If they did none of these things, I'ld find them useful as companions. Granted, they can do serious damage to the bird population, particularly in the suburbs where folks set up feeding stations. There are areas where they should not be allowed to roam. Since they know nothing about property bounds, and can be a bit self centered, they can get in a lot of trouble and be a nuisance.

"Owning a cat can be lots of fun. Generally speaking cats are highly social animals that thrive on human attention. If you don't own a cat or have not had much interaction with them you might think otherwise. For a long time I had thought I was not a "cat person". While I certainly did not dislike cats I did not take the time to learn about them or their personalities. I have always been a dog lover and found watching dogs give chase when they encountered their smaller four legged furry arch enemies amusing."

I have 2 cats love them dearly, but I wasn't always a cat lover. Coincidentally, most of the women I have dated had a cat or multiple cats. And from what I learned cats take care of themselves for the most part. They never really get dirty unless you let them outside. They are great companions. One of my cats is absolutely hilarious, he does stuff i haven't seen animals do on TV. I think they can sense your mood too, because they always come around when I'm down in the dumps. They find all kinds of bugs and stuff. They even find things I lose, lol. Cats also help us learn responsibility, which is a good thing especially if you don't have children. They are very affecionate, even my scary cat.

You really dont know?? besides the fact that they teach us humility and are excellent friends and companions. Without cats it is estimated that a heck of alot more people would have died in ancient times because with the advent of agriculture we relied more on what we grew to survive and mice and rats took advantage of the abundance of food near human civilisation. Because rats and mice are the most successful mammals in terms of adapting to their habitat and reproducing they were a major problem to early agriculture... 2 mice can produce enough offspring in one year to eat the food right out of the mouths of THOUSANDS of people. It is widely accepted that agriculture led to the domestication of cats for the purpose of controlling the population of mice and rats, it is not without reason that ancients revered cats because without them it is unlikely that agriculture would have succeeded as well as it did. Not to mention pestilence would have succeeded in wiping out far more people if cats werent around to control mice and especially rats which are the vectors of seriously harmful diseases and plagues. It is likely if ignorance had not blamed cats for the plague, thousands of lives would have been spared.... if that is not useful to mankind then I dont know what is.

PS a cat should also not be judged on how useful they are to humans, they have as much a right to live upon this earth as do we and perhaps more because they were here first.....

They were originally domesticated to protect food supplies from rodents and other pests.

People in the dim past always had good reasons for domesticating animals. Dogs helped with the hunting, cats protected the food. It was worth having them both around.

After that, they simply grew on us and we liked having them around. They're still in use for their original purposes, too, just not as much.

I run a duplex out in the sticks and I like to have them around to control mice and squirrels. Many modern farmers keep barn cats to control rodents.

etc, etc.

Well, let me see.

The Egyptians considered them as gods, to be the guardians of the "UnderWorld".

England used them to end the "Black Plague".

They now create a balance in nature for all mankind.
