I am the only girl in the family and the oldest of three.

At the time of this memory, I must have been about six. My dad took me fishing at the crack of dawn one summer morning. It was just the two of us (my brothers were still too young to go). We were in a canoe floating around a calm lake as the sun came up. I had a line with a bobber and worm in and we just sat there quietly for hours, enjoying the stillness. I don't remember catching anything, but I do remember at one point throughout the day, my dad turned to me and simply said, "You are so patient. That's what I love about you." We smiled at each other and I don't remember much after that.

He died four years later. That memory will always be my favorite reminder of how lucky I was to spend as much time with him as I did.

Every year we would spend the week of July 4th at the beach. We rented the same cabin each year. The beach was private and I just loved that place! Riding the ocean waves (no pool), looking for seashells every day, drawing in the sand . . . . and once during the week, we'd go down to Myrtle Beach to the Pavillion to ride the rides.

Now, in the summer, you can't see the ocean for the crowd of people and the high-rise condos. And sadly, the Myrtle Beach Pavillion is being torn down to make room for more high-rises.

This is terrible. I'm sitting here trying to think of a really feel-good memory.... and can't think of even one.

Good memories for me are when things were calm and nothing BAD was happening. Isn't that depressing?

Best Wishes,

Sue

I was 11. School was unbearable. There were two bullies whose hobby was to pick on me. I was a total wimp then and nobody would believe me or help me. It was torture. Then I found out I was emigrating to Canada and I didn't care any more and they started to back off. I was escaping and there's nothing better when your life is hell.

Learning to ride my bike in the rain with my brother.
Building snowforts, tobogganing. Coming home after school and watching my mother bake bread. Mmmmm....
