I am looking for an internship location where my brother (38 years old) could live. I can not have him in my house and my parents are getting to old to take care of him. He does not speak english. He is very active but needs supervision for everything he does. Please help me!! I do not know where to start. I am trying to place him in an institution where he could live, have activities, and live there.

Call a health care provider or his doctor and ask if they know of places in the area. You could also check google for any social workers in the area who might be able to help you. I'm not sure of exact locations or if you would have to travel far to get him somewhere but I wish you luck and hope you find a place.

I'll give more information if I find it, but time will run out on this question soon. You can e-mail me at invisiblek5@yahoo.com and I'll respond when I have more info.

Anyway, autistics can receive assistance inside their own homes or apartments. (Even full-time assistance.) I don't have links at the moment (I posted on my LiveJournal for help finding links because Google isn't helping me), but we don't have to be institutionalized. Read the post at http://ballastexistenz.autistics.org/?p=97. Actually, read all the posts at that blog under the tag "institutions." Institutions are not safe for us (or anyone), even now.

Check with the Carolina Living and Learning Center located in Pittsborro, North Carolina. You can also check out this website http://trainland.tripod.com/residential.htm

It lists multiple resources that will help you in your search. Good luck!
