Maybe you misinterpreted the “hints” as something more than what they were. Could it be he was just being playful or friendly? Then again, he could be interested in you and is, for whatever reason, unable to approach you. Is this rival a girlfriend or a friend? You just infer upon these things first. If all else fails, then why not just ask him flat out what their relationship is as well as your own.

I think that honesty is truely the best policy. If you tell him how you feel, and he rejects you, then you don't want him anyway. Maybe he doesn't know how you feel, and because you haven't said anything, he thinks you don't like him the same way he likes you. I you do say something and he walks away, then you will know how he feels and you can move on. Find someone that cares for you as much as you care for them, otherwise it won't work between you two.

Well, talk to his friend and ask him if the guy you like, likes you. If he does, you should take a chance and ask him out. If he doesnt, then try to make him like you but try not to sound or act like you are in love with him or something.

i agree with the first answer.
Trying to ask him out is basically all you can do right now.
It would have been better to ask him out while things were still good between you two.
But looks alittle late now....
All you can do is risk it.
And see what he says.
Who knows....he's prob. just to shy to say any thing. and he prob. likes you just as much as you like him.
Just go for it. and see what happens.

Make sure you get him when he is alone, and ask him out on a date.
Make sure you plan it so you have at least 4 hours to yourselves. That will give you time to chat and make sure (or find out) you are both into each other.

It's war between you and her. Tell him you want him, directly, but not like a stalker. Then whisper some teasing words in his ear, walk away, and say, "The choice is yours."

you are seeming to be desparate. All you can do is to make yourself available and allow him to decide. it's just how things area nd it hurts to be rejected. that's ok he's not the one for you - move on.. If he's chosen her then you have to allow him to make that choice. It's hard. sorry
