Try this website: http://ssdi.rootsweb.com

It lets you do a free search of the SSDI (Social Security Death Index). I find what I'm looking for on here 90% of the time.

Why do you even need the SS #? There really is no reason since he has been dead for over 30 years. Unless your mother is trying to scam something. The story sounds a little fishy..thats all.

Considering the rampant identity theft going on, security on those types of things has tightened up quite a bit. You should contact the SS people directly (socialsecurity.gov). Tell them the specifics of why you need it and who you are. They should be able to help you.

You can check the place where he died where he was born or you could pay and possibly find a site with it on the internet.

Best way is to dig grandpa up and check his wallet. After wards put everything back the same so next time you know where to look.

I don't know that you can get it for free........seems kind of weird that she wouldn't have your Grandfathers SSN in a safe place.

well, if you have his death certificate, it should be on there,if not, you can contact the health department and get a duplicate copy of the death certificate, and it will have all of his information on it. It only costs 5 bucks for a copy!
