Wow. THat's a really good question. I live in a majorly religious Christian family. I can't say anything or else they would throw me out or send me to counseling b/c they'd be afraid I was going to hell or something. I don't necessarily say it's all fake, because there is some truth behind all religions, but I don't agree with a lot of things that the Bible has to say. I just don't believe it that much anymore. I learned to think for myself and everything started to make more sense. Lots of people believe what they are taught and that's not good. If you believe in something, don't believe it just because someone tells you to. Believe it because YOU believe it. And if you believe in something only out of fear (i.e. like going to hell if you don't), how is that a good religion?

I used to do this when I was a teenager and starting to doubt my beliefs. Not quite atheist at the time, but since being anything but Christian is tantamount to atheism in my family, it's close enough. I used to go to church to please them, to shut them up, and just to keep up appearances.
I felt like a sellout and that I was lying to myself, so I quit. Yes, my family has given me a lot of trouble for it, but it hasn't changed my mind. Their nastiness has only reaffirmed that if believers like them can go to Heaven, I don't want to go there myself. I haven't told them I'm an atheist(only my mother and husband know), but I don't pretend to believe, either.
They know I don't go to church or any of the pious things they do, but I don't think they know I'm anything more than a "lazy Christian" and frankly, if they want to believe that, that's their problem, not mine. Just because I don't go to church, doesn't mean I still believe. I certainly never said that in the least. Guess my family just wants to pretend we're all God-fearing people and ignore the truth that not everyone believes the same. Their loss, not mine.
I don't count myself closet-atheist. I don't pretend to be a believer by any measure. But if it doesn't come up in conversation, I don't see any reason to go around telling everyone I meet on the street that I'm atheist. If it doesn't come up, there's no point talking about it. And if I don't talk about it, my family thinks what they want, and that's fine with me. I know my own heart and if they don't want to know who I am because I don't think the same as them, it's truly their loss.

I am a closet atheist. I had an atheist account at Y!A before the clean sweep a couple months ago. I'm not really atheist, but it was fun to play devil's advocate and get thumbs up from all the other atheists. Maybe I'll do it again.

The ones that say they believe but don't are the judgmental argumentative ones you don't like.
If they truly believed then they wouldn't be as concerned with your damnation as they are with giving you the gift of God's love.
