I am curious does having CPR or not breathing mean that one legally dies? Even though they are saved by medical measures?

I am 34 and have lost several family members. But my ex and his mother told me that he had been in a bad car accident a long time ago and that he had been considered legally dead. However after awhile he started to breathing again. Thanx for the answers. Out of curiousity I wonder what it is called to have CPR performed on you and you live? And the medical term for not breathing with no heart beat and being saved by medical means? I hear so many people say there is no such thing as near death experiences. Well how does one explain that it doesn't occur when the person has no heartbeat and not breathing?!? Does anyone understand what I mean?

I myself have had 3 near death experiences. Not breathing, No heartbeat, been saved by CPR. And still people say that it is all in ones mind because there is no scientific explanation. Very confusing.

"Legally' dies is very different than 'really' dies.

As you know, there are various definations of death. One rather simplisitic version is that once the heart stops, you are dead. This is a commonly-held definition that simply does not work medically.

Even with no heartbeat, you are obviously not 'dead dead' if you can be revived.

In most situations, you will not be declared dead until you have been examined by a doctor and it has been determined that you cannot be revived. Often, this is determined by simply trying everything possible first.

There is also a difference between being revived and a 'near death experience' (NDE) in the way the term is usually used. NDE is the whole 'out of body, tunnel of light' bit that many who are revived have described. NDE seems to be the result of various processes going on in the brain.

Legally you are not dead until a licensed physician pronounces your time of death. Biologically, you are dead when your heart stops, you no longer breathe and your body systems shut down.
