How are pickles made? I say they are cucumbers that are put into vinegar and then they become pickles, my fiance says that they are grown in the ground. We have a dinner riding on this.

Huh? Of course they are cucumbers that are brined. The only thing I can think of that comes from the ground is kimchee (not surehow it is spelled), a fermented cabbage that is a staple in Korea - but it isn't grown that way.
