Cats are predators. Their insticts are to clean themselves to avoid being scented by their prey.

cats lick their butts so they can keep themselves nice and clean :) now if you really think that when your cat licks it's butt is not normal, then you can try what my dad did to my cat, K.C.
K.C. was just sitting on the floor licking his butt and all of the sudden my dad poked him in the side and k.C. jumped about 20 ft. in the air.. my mom told him to stop scaring the cats.. she asked how he would feel if they scared him while he was lickin' his butt!! (she was kidding of course)
If you feel that scaring your cat is mean then don't do what my dad did.. but it was pretty funny

because this is how they wash... its also possile if your cat licks there VERY much, like more than a few times a day, it may have some sort of problem...

Well, it's their nature, it looks disgusting but in other hand they clean themselves because no one else does for them, If even does... I guess they won't understand that and keep liking again and again. It's just nature. I wish they could wash with water instead, but it'll not happen unfortunately.

Why do you shower every day (hopefully you do for your cat's sake)? This is a cat's way of showering. Get used to it!

Thank god they do because if they didn't they would be so nasty and dirty. I've noticed my cats are very obsessed with cleaning themselves also...they seem to take great pride in being clean.

they have no toilet paper and therefore they have itchy butts, their tongues being rough, act as an abrasive scouring pad to scrape the butt clean of any microscopic feces causing the painful itching sensation associated with a dirty butt

Keep in mind that if they lick the place they urinate from too much it may mean they have a urinary tract infection and need a vet.
