It's over who should be the head of the faith. The Sunnis say a Caliph shall be chosen by the high up mucktey-mucks from among themselves, the S'hia say it must be a descendent of Mohammad.

Who the true heirs are to the profit muhammad. The shiites believe it was Ali, Muhammad's nephew and son in law. The Tsunis feel that the rightful heir and next in line to Muhammad's dynasty was a muslim from the Arabian penninsula. In addition the majority of shiite-muslims are Persian (Iranian), while most tsunis are of Arabic descent.

Shites believe that their leaders should be direct descendents of the prophet Muhammond known as the Ayatollah. Sunnis on the other end believe that there leader doesn't have to be a direct descendent of Muhammond known as the Caliphate.
