I'm an anesthesiologist, and I'm pretty sure I make more than my Internist colleagues (but less than many of my surgical colleagues).
Yes, anesthesiologists are doctors. All doctors go to medical school and learn the same stuff, and then specialize afterward during residency. Anesthesiology requires a year of internship in pretty much anything (medicine or surgery usually) and then three years of anesthesia residency. Some people then go on and do a fellowship to get advanced training in a subspecialty (cardiac anesthesia, neuroanesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, etc.)
It's very easy to put people to sleep. It's the whole "keeping them alive" and "waking them up again" that gets tricky. Anesthesia is basically hours and hours of resuscitation. (Anesthesia without resuscitation is "execution") Plus, we get the extra fun of putting in spinals and epidurals, and doing nerve blocks, and managing airways, and starting lots of invasive lines.... it's great.
I love my job.

As a rule, an anesthesiologist makes more money. The patient's life is literally in his hands during the surgery and there is a very fine line between being under and dying.

It depends on so many factors that it's impossible to say. If you're going into medicine for the money, think again. You'll be one miserable guy. You cannot let income dictate which specialty you choose. Let your specialty choose you when you do your clinical rotations in med school. You'll know it when you see it, and it may be neither of the ones you listed.

The latter most definitely earns more, and yes, an Anaesthesiologist is a Doctor.
