you do realize that without god man doesn't even agree on what goodness and evil is. They think of things like "subjective truth" and the whole matter is rendered obsolete. Or they agree to make abortion legal. Or they think homosexuality is wrong for hundreds of years and then decide "oh, uh...well, its common, so i guess its ok."

Do you understand that? Evil--devoid of god's law--is decided by what is non-conventional. We don't even consult conscience, do we? There no scientific proof behind conscience, so it doesn't matter in the godless world.

i recently saw a question on this forum that went something like "Aren't you glad there is religious difference in the world, for variety's sake?" Humanity doesn't care about truth enough to survive on their own. You'll always have the big group of selfish people to make societal truth into whatever is conventionally pleasurable.

Ah...just felt like preaching. Now that that's out of my system, i'll go do my chem homework.

btw...i'm not saying there's anything wrong with man's style of morality...its just they have no right to criticize god's when they don't even follow through with their own.

Women were considered incapable of sufficiently rational thought and discretion to vote until the late 19th century. Some people still believe that. Because it was believed for such a long time, does that make it true? Do you believe it's true? Did your grandfather?

Times change. Humanity progresses. That doesn't mean that no one cares about good and evil. It just means that you cannot create a set of absolute laws and expect them to remain relevant for all time.

To answer your first question: "Why does god allow evil to happen?" Which is more rational--?

1) That an all-powerful, all-seeing, all-knowing god sometimes chooses to cause good things to happen to people (answering prayers) but most of the time refrains from interfering when his creations are faced with danger.

2) That there is no god overseeing our actions and pulling the strings. That we are on our own, with only our fellow human beings to help us, in a universe that is both beautiful and dangerous, but has no "feelings" about us, good or bad.

I see it more as up and down, light and dark, good and evil. Without one you can not have the other. If there was no evil in the world then we would not know what good is. Example. Everyday I give you 10 million dollars. Then two years later I only give you 1 million dollar, you will be pretty pissed and feel you are having something bad done to you, when if today I just gave you the one million you would be pretty happy. It's like the yin and the yang, apart they are nothing but together they are the universe. "god" and the "devil" are of the same power if you will. One can not destroy the other because then the other can not exist.

Um. I'm sorry to be the one to break the bad news, but God doesn't exist. He was invtented by people. Bummer.
And I hate to tell you this, but it seems that so many of the people who talk the biggest game about God have the least morals. Look at all these recent Republicans who are always talking about God & morals and stuff, and meanwhile, they're breaking laws, they're lying, they're so corrupt & greedy & they screw over the poor, all the stuff that Jesus, supposedly, would hate.
And that's just hillbilly redneck ***-wipe religous people. What about the Spanish Inquisition? And let's not forget those douchebags who flew the airplanes into those building believed in God (and aboslute truth) just as strongly as you do! Are they moral?
Stick to chem homework! Live a while longer! Leave Alabama and try to meet some different kinds of people. Expand your experience & beliefs. Get back to me in a few years!

>> There no scientific proof behind conscience, so it doesn't matter in the godless world.

Those who study animal sociology would strongly disagree with you. It seems as if animals have very strong consciences, even without bibles! They work in groups, co-operate, have status heirarchies... it seems as if they must have something *inborn* in them!

... Just as we do.

>> Evil--devoid of god's law--is decided by what is non-conventional.

What's 'non-conventional'? Does god tell you that? God told you eating shellfish is 'non-conventional':

Deuteronomy 14:9-10 says:
9 These ye shall eat of all that are in the waters: all that have fins and scales shall ye eat:
10 And whatsoever hath not fins and scales ye may not eat; it is unclean unto you.

Do you eat lobster? Shrimp? Crab? God says it's 'non-conventional'! It must be *EVIL* to eat such items by your own admission, correct?

Stop living in the desert. The rest of us who live in the 21st century are tired of sweeping up the sand from your religious tirades.

supratuner9,

Regarding-"the answer to both is no, according to physics, cold is merely an absence of heat."
Humans make up definitions all the time, just because a group of scientist decided that the definition they wanted to hold for cold is an "absense of heat" doesn't mean that it's the truth or that they even know what they are talking about.
They could have decided instead to say that heat doesn't exist, and it's just the "absense of cold".
Cold and heat are experiences that we all have.. experiences that exist in reality outside of any definition!!!
I am really really tired of people that think just because they have a fancy degree that it gives them some eternal right to declare all truths. Start thinking for yourself.

Pluto is just pluto... it doesn't matter if you call it a planet, a dwarf planet, or a rock. Your definitions are irrelevant, only experience is truth.

"you do realize that without god man doesn't even agree on what goodness and evil is."

Do you realize that "with god" it isn't any different? The majority of Americans are theists and they constantly disagree on what god(s) says right or wrong, or evil and good. For example, you mention abortion being legal. There are many believers in god(s) that listen to god and are pro-choice. According to them, god wants abortion to be legal. Who are you to say that their god is wrong?

Evil is a choice that humans make. We are free beings so we can choose between right and wrong. We aren't free if we are forced to be good. sadly some choose evil over good.

ok, ill ask you a couple of questions.
1. does cold exist
2. does dark exist
the answer to both is no, according to physics, cold is merely an absence of heat. a term we have made up to explain the absence of heat. cold does not exist, it is a term we have made up to explain the absence of light, the slimmest ray of light pierces the thickest darkness. so theoretically evil is a term we have made up to explain the absence of God in a situation.

God uses evil for good.

There a story in Genesis about these brothers selling their younger brother as a slave. Which leads their younger brother to become just as poewerful as pharoh in egypt which saved thousands of people. You see, God used the sin of the older brother to save thousands.
