Having just been through this I feel qualified to answer.....my dog (obviously called the B word, but this site puts stars there instead so lets just say dog) always bleeds for about 3 weeks and then I understood the 4th week (or thereabouts) was the week they were really in season and gave off the scent to atttract males. I have had her for about 2 years and never worried about her season as my other dog is a girl too and we have a secure and gated garden. I managed to acquire (I live in Spain and find abandoned dogs regularly) a proper dog (as in a male) in August. I planned to spay my girl before her next season as did not want puppies, but didn't have the money. She then came into season early and panic set in. My vet said that while she was bleeding it was unlikely that she would get pregnant so I relaxed a bit, bought some dog knickers (which the male pulled off in about 30 seconds) and let the male and female play. Then I asked on here if she might be pregnant as I saw them tie (bottom to bottom which apparently is the only way to mate successfully) and got a 50/50 response. She still bled the same for about 2.5 weeks all told, but in the final week the male showed no interest in her. Then the panic set in again, the female started eating more and so I called the vet. He said to bring her in for an injection to abort or if I was not planning to breed (which I am not as too many animals are already homeless and in need of new and loving homes) then to get her spayed. I opted for the spaying and begged, borrowed and stole to get the money together (I also had her hernia done and she need anti biotics and pain killer after the op) and she had it done Monday. It cost a fortune, but she was pregnant with 8 puppies who were removed. It was very early on so the vet said they were very small. I felt really awful and it didn't help my poor dog was ill after. She slept all day Monday and just looked sad, she got a little better Tuesday and Wednesday she was back to her old self. I took her to the beach last night as she loves in, probably not best with her scar still healing, but she really loved it. She is now back to her old self, eating her food and competing for attention with the others. I would never have homed the puppies, I couldn't have kept them so it was the right decision. I should never have let it happen though and I take responsibility for that. Your dog is very probably pregnant so you need to do some thinking. There are so many animals in shelters, puppies and older dogs that need homes, do you really want to fill those homes with your puppies? Can you afford and do you have the space to keep them all? Good Luck, I hope you make the right decision for you and your dog.

The blood turns to a clear fluid, but it is dictated by body cycle not if mated. Usually about a week, maybe only five days.

Why are you mating your dog? Aren't there laws against that sort of thing?

yes. If you are breeding your dog, please do more research. It's apparent that you aren't prepared for the responsibilities and realities of breeding.
