Unfortunately no. Only HD DVDs and Blue Ray Discs can be
viewed in high definition resolutions. Some DVD players how-
ever, will upconvert DVDs to higher resolutions. You will have
to look for this feature on DVD players and/or HDTVs.

Here is a more detailed explanation.

Most HDTVs are either 720p or 1080i (there are some 1080p also). These numbers denote resolution. 720p means that the screen has 720 progressively scanned vertical lines of resolution, and 1280 lines of horizontal resolution. 1080i is 1080 interlaced vertical lines and 1920 horizontal. Some TVs such as many plasmas have different resolutions such as 768p or 1024p and are still considered HD. An SDTV or standard definition TV is 480i (480 interlaced vertical, 640 horizontal) and there are also EDTVs (enhanced definition) which adds progressive scan.

A standard DVD is encoded in 480p. This means that when you play it on any TV, the maximum resolution it can reach is 720x480p. This means that you are not using a great deal of your TVs resolution. Progressive scan can make the picture better, and it will be better on an HDTV anyway, but there is no way to get HD from an ordinary DVD. HDDVD and Blu Ray is encoded in 720p, 1080i or 1080p, and can display at the TVs full resolution.

Upconverting DVD players are usually a waste of money since any HDTV already upconverts to it's native resolution, and usually does a better job of it. Just turn on progressive scan and make sure your TV is calibrated well and that's about the most you can do for ordinary DVDs.

Only Blu-Ray and HD-DVD's are in true high definition, however even regular DVD's do look better on an HDTV. Make sure you have a progressive scan DVD player and hook it up to your HDTV using the component video jacks, which are the blue, red and green RCA cables. I think you'll be pleased with the quality!

alright .... here is the skinny ..... regular dvd's cannot be turned into hd .... but that doesnt mean that you cannot get a higher resolution out of them..... upconvert or up scaling dvd players can convert dvd 480p to 1080p..... most people only know of the 1080i dvd players ..... well denon makes a upscaling dvd player that turns a 480p dvd into 1080p with the help of an algorithem and you will pay for it the dvd player costs 300.00+ but it plays almost anything.....
