I heard that this is totally natural for dogs, because cats' digestion works differently and they leave behind nutrients that dogs can digest. Dogs will eat rabbit droppings too. Trying to train them not to be dogs is pointless.

The only things you can do are:

1) put up barriers in your place so that the dog's movement is restricted (this is what I have), or

2) get a self-cleaning cat-box that scoops up right after the cat leaves. Rover will have to be really quick that way. I don't prefer these because of the cost of the disposable containers.

3) put the cat box where fluffy can reach it by jumping or slipping through a narrow space, but rover can't make it. Not an option for me since our cat is fat and lazy.

Don't put it past Rover to learn how to defeat your countermeasures, though. Our beagle is a genius dog, and figured out how to open doors. I'm convinced that if he had apposable thumbs, he could do anything. Luckily he thinks my gate is too tall to jump...

Put the litter box up high, say on top of the dryer. Cats are more likley to climb and crawl and jump like an explorer than dogs. Good luck.

Since cats are more agile than dogs and can climb easier why not putting the kitty litter in a high shelf and set up an obstical so the cat could climb it. I'm sure yur dog won't be able to reach it.

This is a trick that works for dogs eating their own. Take meat tenderizer and sprinkle on cats food. This changes the smell of droppings. Because dogs eat with there smell more than taste this should help.

Good Luck
PS they have dog breath mints also. lol

if no cover get one with a cover and move it somewhere the dog cannot get to but the cat can.
my dog did it too so i put the litter box on a ledge the dog could not get on and the cat just had to be shown where the box was.

I have wondered that question myself. I have put my cat's box in my room and keep the dogs out but somehow they still manage to get to it. I try to immediately clean it out everyday as soon as I get home from work and before they come in. I have two dogs and it seems they wanna go to my room but I have a guard gate attached that they cannot go in unless I'm in there.

Had the same problem. Best thing to do is to put it out of your dogs reach. We elevated ours, but some people have rooms they can add a kitty door to so the cat can access, but the dogs can't.
