First it would be nice to know if it is a spot where your pet go's a lot. That said first you need to use some kind of carpet cleaner to clean the spot. Then use distilled vinegar to rinse the carpet. If you use a carpet machine like rug doctor you can use two cups of vinegar to the tank of cold water. The smell of the vinegar will leave as soon as the carpet drys and the smell of your pet with it. I used to have a cleaning company and it works on almost any odder I have come across it even worked on a home where there were over 10 cat. Once I finished the smell of cat was completely gone.

A really great product is Nature's Miracle. I have five dogs and I love it. Not only does it take the smell of urine out, it also removes any odors and stains that could be left by feces, blood, or vomit. And the best part is that it doesn't just cover the odor. It totally removes it so that your pet doesn't have much of a desire to go potty in the same place twice! Nature's Miracle is available in an original formula, and in a citrus scented OxyPower formula as well. They both work great, and the citrus smells pretty good, too. You can find Nature's Miracle at your local pet store, and a 1 gallon container will cost you about $20 USD.
Hope this helps!

Go to the petshop and buy a bottle of stain and odour remover. Make sure it is one that also contains a deterrent which will help stop the dog returning to the same place! If the dog is trained but has an accident occasionally its a good idea to have it in ready! Steam clean your carpets rather than just shampooing as most just cover the top layer of carpet!
