Possibly a big bang type situation. The answer to the other two questions is that we don't know anything for sure. I read a few books explaining what may have happened to cause the expansion and where the dense matter came from but I honestly don't remember the full explanation since I'm not a science wiz and I'm not going to cut and paste 100 pages of information. I really don't think it's that important if you don't believe in God in the first place.

Since I am an atheist who has actually taken graduate courses in General Relativity and Cosmology I will give you my best educated opinions.

1. How did the universe begin?

This is kind of a trick question in my opinion. One can consider reality at various levels. On one level the Unverse did not begin at all. It is eternal space-time. That is the way you need to look at it. Sure the big bang is a beginning of space, But and this is a big but, it doesn't mean that on a more fundamental level the universe is not timeless and eternal.

2. What caused the expansion of the universe. This question is more properly framed as why do we live in a portion of the universe in which is space is expanding with respect to time. Both Time and Space are derived quantities. Neither is fundamental. But only in regions of reality which look like an expanding space with respect to time can beings like ourselves evolve.

3. Where did the particle or dense matter before the explosion or expansion come from?

There is no "Before the expansion" The big bang marks the beginning of time coordinates in space-time. But Matter actually forms after the big bang as the direct result of inflation. The reason this does not violate conservation of Mass-Energy is that inflation also results in negative gravitational potential energy exactly balancing the positive mass/energy we observe.

When you understand that reality can be viewed and understood on multiple levels, these questions become understood. What is fundamental is eternal and unchanging. It is only when you look at its appearence relative to us that it looks like the expanding space we observe.

Nobody knows the answer to the first question - or the subsequent two questions. It's all theoretical, just like god. Who created him? If god always was, then the universe can enjoy the same logic.

The difference between science and religion is that science doesn't claim to have all of the answers. Not yet anyways. If you don't know how you engine works does that mean that God is pushing your car?

Big Bang.
We don't know yet.
We don't know yet.

That was easy.

Wow - look at all the people who are so sure of the wrong answer (that "god" nonsense).

if the universe is expanding then it is infinite.

infinity X population = 0 so we don't exist
