Hi girl, I don't know what your illness is but I can surmise from your question that you are afraid of your parents. You probably expect them to not approve and criticize; you did say they were "Old School" and old school people aren't noted for thinking too highly of the mentally ill. But Old School to you is modern to me, because when I became mentally ill at about 30 (1962) I thought the people who had to deal with me then were unapproving and Old School. That was when Psychiatrists were first beginning to prescribe "Tranquilizers". It was just after "Snake Pit" mental wards stopped being the norm.

I have found that a certain reservation exists yet for those who are mentally ill; even in the USA. The most feared diagnosis one can receive, that of Schizophrenic Paranoid (which I am) was still considered in Gt. Britain this year as cancelling the life of the person (because of prejudice) to whom the diagnostic label was applied. Psychiatrist there proposed abolition of the scientifically meaning less label Schizophrenia and using instead the descriptive name Dopamine Dysfunction Disorder, DDD, for those who have hallucinations and the delusions they find necessary to explain what is happening to them. If you are DDD then you might start by talking to them straightforwardly about the progress that has been made and still needs to be made with your diagnosis.

Be positive about your condition and the prognosis for it. They are your parents and they still love you. It should not be any different than the diagnosis for a physical ailment; explaining this may be necessary, along with the positive attitude for your prognosis, since they are "Old School". Mental illness is not a character defect but has causes which may not yet be known but will be found out soon. Dont forget to tell them that modern med's make it possible for those with mental illnesses to function almost normally. Good luck and happy holidays.
