depends on the person and what the discussion is. atheists tend to know more about the history of the bible and the history of the period that the texts were written(which helps you to understand the writhing style). some christians take passages out of context to support their claim, thought or feeling and the other will do the same to refute what the last person said with other scripture, this form of argument is clearly taking the scripture out of context and its broader meaning, even the devil was able to do this when he tempted jesus in the desert, which would indicte how dangerous it is to personally interpret the scripture and to use it for personal gain instead of finding the true meaning. there is also the atheists that maybe understand what the text is but knows how sensitive christians can be.....there are many scenarios so by and large it is probably roughly the same.

Atheists. Well, it depends. You can't generalize either category, they all have their faults and weaknesses. But, I'd say that a Christian who knows the Word well, knows it better than an atheist who knows the Word well. A lot of atheists take it way out of context, they don't take into account the customs of the time, the author, who the author was writing to, why he wrote it, etc. The Bible was written for back then, so you have to read it with the mindset in-mind that they had back then.

Both. Christians and Atheists are human and are capable of taking scripture out of context alike. We all have a mind of our own and interrupt materials differently. We can do this easily. So to say which one does it more or is worse that I cannot put on any group of people. It is one individual who does this and that could be you or I.

Saopaoco: Some Atheists may not believe now but there are who used to.
It is because of their keen mind and questioning that they do not accept the teachings of false religions. Some might have been disillusioned with absurd teachings that professing chrisians say the bible teaches but actually not.
--------
there are professing christians who do not even understand the bible and believes only what they are thought without researching first.
Atheists are better when they doubt whatever teachings appear to be out of context....

I'd say that's about even.
I do wish that atheists would lay off some of the sillier arguments (e.g., the "why is there evil?" one, and "how can god send good people to hell?"). Why stoop to that level?
I'd say that on the average, atheists know the Bible as well as Christians do, though of course there are some Christians who know it far better. Don't forget that here in the U.S., anyway, most atheists were raised as Christians.

Both can do this. But those who are saved have the Holy Spirit who teaches them all truth- and when we pray for the Holy Spirit to teach us and not get out of it what we want to hear, but what God wants to teach us--that is when we receive the truth. But yes we must keep in context of scripture, know who it is speaking to and what it is speaking about- instead of just picking and choosing scriptures and forming your own conclusion....I pray for the Lord to teach me always...and to stay in context of scripture.

Depends.
There are Atheists who understands the Bible well so they are now disillusioned with the wrong teachings of the church and chose to be Atheists. There are professing christians who do not understand the bible so accepts what the church tells them without questioning and finding out the truth.

Well, atheists believe scripture is meaningless and has no credibility, so I don't think they really can take it out of context as Christians can.
