If you have no experience at all with this, then the first songs you should sing would ideally be very simple, I-IV-V progression stuff. Simple melodies and simple chords will let you catch on at something you can handle. Gradually get more complex as you master the simple stuff.

Don't take the song too slow, otherwise you will run out of breath quickly and screw up the phrasing. If you have any problems that are tempo related, then try doing either singing or guitar in that tough spot.

Also, don't worry about doing guitar or vocals extremely well before the other. Your goal is to do both at the same time, so you should practice that way also.

Good Luck!

I had that problem once, but it's actually pretty easy. All it requires is knowing both the guitar part and the lyrics by heart and having an idea what you want it to sound like (i.e., how the singing and guitar parts interact). Focus more on the guitar part while you're playing too -- you want the singing to just flow effortlessly while you play the guitar.

What really helps though is to practice with a drummer or tap the tempo with your foot. It helps because the rhythm keeps everything tied together.

I always get the guitar down first so I don't have to be thinking too much about it...then I add the singing...but don't wait until your guitar playing is perfect...practice doing both at the same time...start slowly at first...eventually it will come together...and the most important point is don't be hard on yourself...everyone has to start off this way.

Hello??!!..... the only right answer here is to practice, that's it!
because you are saying that you know how to play the guitar already and you also sing, so to me that shows that the problem is you not knowing how to play both instruments, the voice and guitar, the problem is you not practicing enough.

the basic idea is to forget about the guitar and focus on your singing. Make sure you can play the song really well b4 you start to sing

I'm the same way, except with piano. For me, it doesn't have to do so much with being able to play or sing well, but rather being able to play or sing THE PARTICULAR SONG well. For me, one of the two skills has to be put on absolute auto-pilot. My hands have to be able to move to the chords without me thinking about them while I'm singing. (That's why so many pop songs don't have a lot of chord changes.)

I've been a musician for thirty years and I'd like to answer your question by suggesting a book.
"You Are Your Instrument" by Julie Lyonn Lieberman.
I would almost guarantee by the time you finish reading it you'll be able to do it easily and have a wider understanding of "letting go" and finding a comfortable style and at the same time learn a lot about theoretical stuff and musicians health.

It's a whole lot of practice. I find that when I watch where I am placing my chords, I can better. However, then you need to work on projection. Practice in front of a mirror. It will help more than you think. :) Good luck
