I've been on Xanax for about a month now, taking 1mg a day for the most part but some days I've taken 2mg and others 0 (overall I'm averaging more than 1mg per day), depending on whatever I'm doing socially or when I'm feeling anxious. I've found that I have major ADHD symptoms after taking xanax, even after just 1mg. The calming effect I get from xanax is great, but afterwards it makes me paranoid. I lose focus easily and cannot concentrate on handling multiple simultaneous tasks. I've looked online and it appears that my dosage is somewhat normal. I find myself being very consumed and interested by conceptual things I read on the internet, see on TV, or by having a good conversation with someone, but I cannot handle mundane tasks and going out to do normal things. I feel confused. So I don't know if I'm overdosing on xanax, or not getting enough of it. Can someone please help me? I don't know how xanax relates to ADHD. Is it a symptom of xanax withdrawl or an overdose?

This is a matter that you need to discuss with the prescribing doctor..;

It's called an adverse reaction. Sometimes a tranquilizer can inhibit the emotional inhibitors and instead of calming down a person can get euphoric.

Then again, if it occurs when you are off the medication you could be having a rebound anxiety.

Then there is the possibility that the medication is disturbing what's known as REM (dreaming) sleep so that you are not gettin normal sleep-necessary for emotional functioning.

In any event, you know the problem started with the Xanax, so get back in touch with your health care provider.

Another suggestion-aerobic exercise is a great way to help reduce anxiety.

It sounds to me that if you are doing 2 mg. a day some days, you may be experiencing withdrawal symptoms. Just how often do you take 2 mg. vs. 1 and 0 mg. If your 2 mg. is more often, it is my guess that it is withdrawal. Talk to your doctor in an honest way. He/she will be able to help you. Is your Xanax prescribed prn (as needed)? If not, take it as directed. If it is not working, then your doctor will help you find another alternative. Best wishes.

I have ADD and Anxiety, so at one point I was prescribed Xanax, and then Clonopin. I can say for sure that ANY benzodiazepine will make the ADD symptoms worse, even lessening the efficacy of ADD meds along the way. If it's not working, taper off and quit taking it. Benzo's are very problematic drugs to deal with.

Taper off of that med! I work for a psyciatrist and I have never seen anybody feel better when taking Xanax or clonazepam, they are so horrible. You can't just quit taking it because you will get really sick but you should talk to your doctor about going down and do it soon before you get dependant on it. The symptoms that you are having right now will not get better, they will steadily get worse and then you will get so dependant on it that you will think that it is helping you but everybody else will know that it isn't. Believe me, I see it everyday with people who my office is trying to get off of that med, it's just nearly impossible to because by the time they get to us, they already think that they need it and tend to relapse on it and take the wrong dosage. I can't say this enough, get off of it asap!

your doctor will not prescribe xanax if it will not help. But, if it has side effects that you feel and it bothers you, it is very important to tell your doctor how you feel so that he/she can replace the xanax for a better medicine that will suit you. As long as you take the dosage exactly your doctors prescribed, you are fine.

Xanax can be addictive. But it doesn't sound like you're using it for the wrong reasons. Talk to your shrink that perscribed it. Xanax might just not be right for you.
