The practice (of cross burning) appears to have been the product of Thomas Dixon, whose book The Clansman formed the story for the movie, The Birth of a Nation.
In the book, cross-burning is borrowed from an old Scottish rite – Dixon apparently believed that the members of the Reconstruction Ku Klux Klan were the reincarnated souls of the Clansmen of Old Scotland – that the Klan uses to celebrate the execution of a former slave
Now you know!
(P.S. You didn't really expect it to make sense, did you? LOL!)

I think the KKK has it's own reason for burning a cross on your lawn. The KKK feels all their cross burnings are justified, even on white peoples lawns. I heard of a white family having a cross burned on their lawn just for being catholic. So it's not just blacks they are after. I recently read where now they are targeting foreigners. (as read in my local newspaper) they are coming to rally in our town in the summer of 2007. This is what the leader told a news reporter. He's leaving blacks alone, he's going for the illegal immigrants now.

Believe it or not that group was not about hate in the beginning and had nothing to do with race. It was about protecting citizens from carpet baggers after the war. Like so many things it evolved and changed into the hate group of today.
As far as cross burning I have no idea. Don't care either. Any philosophy that is based on racial superiority is just evil. I don't like the way they twist the words of God. Obviously in their eyes the cross is best used for firewood and to promote fear and discord.

I don't think they necessarily consider the cross burning dishonoring their religion. Crosses were the common means of punishment in the days of Jesus. Jesus was not the first or the last to be hung on a cross.

In the Klan, when a cross is burned, it is a declaration of war. In their eyes it is a holy war.
In reality they have perverted their own religion to justify their hate.

I read that they were "illuminating" the cross. They actually have an official KKK website, you should read it. It will sicken you.

It is very good imagery, and they do that to scare the people they are persecuting. Kind of like the hell fire thing that ministers use.
