I guess your windows Me uses FAT 32 file format and Win Xp can be installed as FAT 32 and also as NTFS. But NTFS is better.

Now, one way to save your images is to backup in to cds/dvds etc. probably the best way.
because, upgrading from Win Me to Xp is big step. I really doubt(I don'y believe microsoft) that this upgrade can be done without any trouble of data loss.

You can still try some alternate ways:
1. create partition using software called partition magic or Gparted. Then install win XP in one partiion and keep files in others. Then switch the files.

2. Strictly choose upgrade option when installing win xp. You might have to choose FAT 32 otherwise it will not recognige your old image files.

Hope you understand.

you should be able to just put the cd in the cd-rom and upgrade to xp. it simply replaces me with xp and you don't loose anything
