I'm a senior in highschool, next year I will study criminology in Uni. I was just wondering if any women out there find becoming a police officer hard, how the job takes a toll on family, and most importantly: DO YOU KNOW ANY WOMEN ON THE K9 UNIT!??

I love dogs and have always dreamt of becomign a K9 officer; however, I've heard from a K9 guy that the testing to be in the unit is really hard, only about 1 in every 20 K9 Officers is a woman...

There are not many women in police work, and K9 positions are very competitive, so it's stands to reason there will be very few female K9 handlers. It's not sexism or anything like that, just the way the numbers work out. On the flip side, I know several awesome female dog handlers.

If that's what you want, go for it. Being a dog handler is awesome! Keep working for it, show your interest to the K9 supervisor, volunteer on your time off to be quarry for the dogs, etc. Good luck!

I've known female officers who weren't specifically K9 units but were on the search and rescue squad and had trained search and rescue dogs. I am certain there will be many opportunities to work with canines and to pursue a career in law enforcement, and you sound like you're really going to try hard for whatever you do and you are thinking ahead, so I'm sure you can do anything you want to do! Best of luck.

I sure do know a few who are K9 officers. But realized first you have to become a police officer in most areas with a bit of experience before you apply for K9 duty. So look into it first. Merry Christmas. Good luck with your new career

I don't personally know a femal K-9 handler (apprehension) but have known some who's dog was for narcotics detection. It does take more upper body strength to be a K-9 handler and it is rigorous training but I know of plenty of men who couldn't meet the task. I say if it is something you want go for it but you will most definitely have to get some experience under your belt before most agencies will allow you to attempt a transfer into a specialty division. Good luck with your career

There are a few. It's a competitive position, and there are fewer women police officers to compete for the prized spots, so... Same thing for women in motorcycle patrol or mounted units. They're out there, just not so many.

You can do it. It is always better to try and see, than never try and never know. Good Luck!

The physical demands are very tough for a woman because of the upper body strength requirements. (Start working out now)

You will also never really be trusted by male officers and will always have to prove yourself.
