I believe in God, but not the conventional sort of god that most religions seem to promote. I'm a panthiest, because my reason and experienc,. pondering and living thru the tough questions of life, have led me to adopt panthiesm. So my faith does not limit my brain exercise; I have arrived at it in part via brain exercise.
I was, however, raised in a strict Catholic family, and I know what you mean by the "faith card" can limit thinking. People who believe in strict religious dogma are afraid to use the minds God gave them, afraid of committing a thought crime so to speak. There are many passages in the bible that discourage thinking and education, You know, "lean not to your own understanding", "God has chosen the foolish things of the world to mock the wise", "God's ways are not man's ways", etc.

I've never found faith limiting to my ability to think, but then again, I don't play the "faith card" when it comes to the hard questions. It's as Thomas Jefferson said, if God does exist, He would want us to question everything, because blind faith is useless.

I have seen politicians play the "faith card", you know randomly mis-quoting The Bible and such.
Does that limit thinking? Well, I am not sure that they actually "think" for themselves anyway.
As a Christian, which I am assuming you are targetting Christians (how original), my answer would be what "faith card" are you referring to that you feel would "limit brain exercise (thinking)?"?
I would love to know, what is so scary about Jesus Christ? Is it NOT Him but the fact that comitting your life to Christ makes you reason your accountablity for your actions, thoughts and lifestyle? It must be.

Here is what I teach my kids @ church:

Fact-->faith-->feeling

Our faith is based on facts/facts determine what we believe, our feelings come from that faith/our faith is not based on feelings. Truth is VERY important at our church & in my personal faith.

I do agree that those who just play the "faith card" are a bit nieve.

I believe in God but at the same time I am no dummy. I do use my brain and don't sit back on my laurels.

No, rather it enlightens the mind, to comprehend what the truth is, it is disbelievers who are stuck in darkness.

[045:023] Have you seen him who takes his own lust (vain desires) as his ilâh (god)? And God knowing (him as such), left him astray, and sealed his hearing and his heart, and put a cover on his sight. Who then will guide him after God? Will you not then remember?

[045:024] And they say: "There is nothing but our life of this world, we die and we live and nothing destroys us except Ad-Dahr (time)." And they have no knowledge of it, they only conjecture.

The faith card? Now I have faith in God, in His will, but I don't know that I have ever played on that faith.
Elaborate please.

well i'm an agnostic and you know what i find myself to be very open minded and i like that feeling but alot of people who are religious tend not to think about things because they believe that their way is correct and everybody else is wrong i guess it's just easier for them to be told what to think and how to act it's just easier for them to live their lives that way because they never have to think for themselves so in a way i can see how they can be perceived to be brainwashed

Atheists, do you realize how much you are shortening your lives with your relentless anger? You know, those lives you enjoy so much more because you aren't restrained by Christian mores? I'm going to have to tell you, I watch alot of Atheists' posts, and they do NOT seem to be enjoying themselves. They seem frustrated and full of unexplained rage.
