Personally, I think it is. Putting X in front of mas was originally done by groups of people who wanted to take Christ out of Christmas and still celebrate the holiday. By putting an X where Christ should be tells people that you do not recognize Jesus Christ. I don't know about you but I am a believer so even if it means a couple more letters in a text msg or an IM, or what ever, I give credit where credit is due.
Hope you make the right choice.

X is also short for Christ, because X (chi) was the Greek letter for "Ch". So it's perfectly all right. The letters XP (=Chr) has been used as an abbreviation for Christ among Christians at least since the 4th century. They are called "the Labarum". The Roman emperor Constantine I (ruled 306 - 337), who was also the first emperor that converted to Christianity, designed a new military standard to be carried before his army, with these two letters which displayed the first two Greek letters of the word Christ - Chi (χ) and Rho, (ρ). The reason why he put the letters on the standard was that he had dreamt of this emblem and a voice saying "In hoc signo vinces" (In this sign you shall conquer). So the abbreviation has an ancient and deeply religious history.

It depends mostly on where you're using this term.
If it's a religious setting like in a church newsletter, then always use 'Christmas'. Otherwise, you risk offending people who believe the holiday as become too secular.
If it's in a non-religious but formal setting like a newspaper, always use 'Christmas' because 'Xmas' is only used in cheesy advertisements.
If the setting is neither religious nor formal, then do whatever you want.

It's fine. The X is derived from the Greek "Chi" which was the initial for Christ way back in the Roman Empire.

"Christ" was often written as "XP" or "Xt" as far back as 1021 AD. It's not exactly wrong. It comes from the ancient abbreviations for Χριστος (Greek for "Christ")

Yes it is, They put the X there to cross out the word Christ. He is the reason for the season and should not be X'ed out.
