I've noticed that people are flattered to hear that someone said "you're cute" from a third party, but when you tell it to them first person they give kind of a strange reaction like they arent sure if i just insulted them or not. I'm not necessarily talking about "cute" like hitting on someone. I'm talking about I think your mannerisms are adorable or your personality is light and fun... I think its a compliment, but sometimes people react like I'm being condescending. Is it inappropriate to call anyone over the age of 15 cute?

It could be regarded as condescending as many of the attributes that people now tend to regard as cute are child-like and so subordinate.

It's sort of a pity, because "cute" didn't start out that way.

If you want to be less likely to offend, it is probably safer to be more exact about the trait you find attractive.

It depends on the way you say it, and under what circumstances.

I have also noticed that guys and girls seem to have different meanings for the word "cute".

depends on if you are talking to a baby or puppy. if not either of these, i'd leave the cute comment to myself
