My parents dont use this site, but they told me that they hated me, and that i should have been like my brother. who by their standards is perfect in every way.
it still hurts even though it was many years ago. I am 17 and still living at home and cant wait to move out.

I have 2 boys and 1 girl, and I asked my oldest, why can't you be more like your brother? He's a tough nut to crack, so I was trying to get some response out of him. It didn't work, and I ended up feeling bad. I know it's not a good idea to compare your children, and I do try to refrain from doing that.

The worst thing that was said to me by my mom was "I don't care". I am 30 now and I still hate that saying more than anything.. It hurt then and still does..

that they were just like their father ( a dead beat dad). My 6 year old and 4 year old knew this was an insult and we all cried once it was said. Now I remind them daily of how much like me they are and the positive reinforcement works much better for me than the negative. It will never happen again.

I once told my now 5 year old nephew that if he didn't stop jumping on his bed I would hang him from the ceiling by his toe nails. I wouldn't have of course but he didn't know that. He looked panicked for a sec then stopped jumping on the bed, so i guess it worked. He knows I love him and now we joke about it. He tells me if he can't have a cookie he will hang me from the ceiling by my toe nails.

I told my son who was 18mo at the time he was being a poo poo head because he was really cranky. He pointed at me and said "poo poo head" :)
Other than that: I think very carefully before I speak to my kids - my mom always told me that you never know whats gonna happen so she would never let us leave the house without saying I love you. She always told us how proud she was of us... my mom died suddenly from a heart attack 5 years ago. I dont want the last memory my kids have of me being something horrible I said to them and I dont want my last memory of my kid being that either.

Well... my daughter is only a month old... so far, the worst was when I jokingly called her pizza face (she's going through a "baby acne" phase).

That if they were not going to listen then I was not going to be their mom. It worked but I felt sooo bad when my son came to me crying that he "needed a mommy and you are the bests." It broke my heart. Haven't told them that since.
