As a driver he will most likely carry out basic training at Pirbright then move on to trade training at St. Omer in Aldershot as well as Leconfield near Hull. His postings will most likely be UK South as most RLC driver assets are now in and around Aldershot and Abingdon. He may even be posted to Germany (which is where I am at the mo). He may very well deploy to Iraq or Afghanistan and although it may worry you, you should take note that he will receive the best training prior to leaving. The driver role is obviously less risky than the teeth arms such as the infantry but over in Iraq we face the same threat as everyone else. I just came back from my second tour of Iraq and I have also deployed to Kosovo, Africa and Northern Ireland. This started as a job for me to get a few skills at 17 that I would have to wait for as a civilian. 10 years later it is my career as I loved the job so much I stayed and pay no attention to the press who always have a whine about 'our boys'; most of them haven't got a clue what happens day to day. The pay is good, the facilities are excellent and the welfare system for families is second to none. My wife and I met at 18 (although we did not marry straight away) and the Army has always accommodated us and our two children including housing healthcare and schooling. I would advise a career to anyone but maybe I am biased as an inside man!
As a driver he will also gain NVQ certificates in road haulage as well as any classroom based work he wishes to undertake. I left school with 5 A grade GCSE but I want to do my A levels now. The Army, as always, has offered it's support and even some financial backing to allow me to do this. Go for it!

depends most recruits are being sent straight to iraq at the moment so he may well be posted there after hes done his training. Its as safe and as dangerous as any other job in the army, he just has to take his chance's!

If he joins the army as a driver remember one thing, he is a soldier first and will drive wherever they send him, yes it does mean iraq and afghanistan, he will be as safe as any other soldier out there.

It's the army. He may end up in Iraq or Afghanistan. It's a one in three chance or so, depending on his regiment.

Marry him you silly girl, that way you get a decent Widows pension and a front pew at his funeral, where his mates will carry the coffin and you might pull one of them or a rupert (officer)
Lets face it half the bloody army is in Afannystan or I Rack so he will be headed for death valley and the most vulnerable of all jobs, so get them banns read and its married quarters for you.
