Great question...I will answer it because I haven't seen any great answers. Mine won't be much better but here goes
Yes gum disease is treatable. Reversible...well... is not as easy to answer.
True periodontal disease (aka gum diesease, or pyorea is the old term) normally means bone loss. In general terms the jaw bone helps keep the teeth in place with the help of the periodontal ligament . When inflammation caused by ....say ....gingivitis has occured and lasts...the inflamation and it's chemical products start to break down the bone and the attachments (in affect creating bone loss and pocketing). If enough bone has been lost, the teeth will become mobile and fallout. Poor oral hygiene, diabetes and smoking all contribute to the disease.
Treament normally consists of deep cleanings referred to as periodontal scaling and root planing in the dental world. Some will prescribe peridex as well (a perscription mouth rinse). The goal of treatment is to regain attachment. Bone, however, will not come back with this type of treatment. Therefore back to your question is it reversible?...my answer no. Typically once the bone is lost it won't come back...the goal is to decrease those pockets and prevent things from getting worse. So it definitely is worth treating.
Having said this though, periodontists (gum specialists) have some treatments available to combat the bone loss. They have other more options than mosts dentists know about....but not all of them are that reliable. If you have a severe case, I would definitely talk to the specialists first...before taking the teeth out (assuming you want to keep them) Good Luck
Good luck

Hey,
Depends which type of gum disease u have.Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums and is treated and reversed by good oral hygiene from yourself and a cleaning.
Periodontitis is the more serious one where the bone holding the tooth in place starts to break down (where u will notice ur teeth moving )and when it fully breaks down they will fall out.Unfortunately with periodontitis you cant bring back the bone that has been destroyed but you can stop it from getting worse which is the most important thing.

Firstly, its never too late to see your dentist. I understand that this all seems very scary but I can assure you that gum disease is very treatable and often reversible with perseverance. You need to improve your oral hygiene. The white gunk you can see at your gum line is called plaque, and it is basically full of bacteria which make acid and cause your teeth to decay. In addition to this, the plaque irritates your gums, causing them to swell up and bleed. Therefore it is essential that you get rid of it by brushing. You should get a medium bristled toothbrush that you can use well. Go round the mouth in an order ie. bottom teeth left to right outside, bottom teeth left to right on the inside next to your tongue, then upper teeth left to right outside, then upper teeth left to right inside. Angle your brush at an angle of about 45 to your gum line and use gentle back and forth movements down the length of your tooth, brushing no more than two teeth at a time. It is important that you also brush your gums. Initially, your gums will bleed, but don't worry, this is due to the swelling, and if you are persistent this will stop. Plaque also develops between your teeth too, so its important to remove that too. You can use floss or dental tape to remove this. If you are unsure how to use floss, there are tiny brushes called "inter dental brushes" which look like little bottle brushes that fit in the space between your teeth. The come in a variety of sizes and your dentist will be able to point you in the direction of your size. you can get medicines to help, but the best method really is keeping your mouth really really clean. When your oral hygiene improves and stays improved, your gums will go back to being healthy, pink, not bleeding and not swollen. Book a dental appointment as well, as they will be able to give your teeth a thorough clean and fix any immediate problems. Other than that, happy brushing.

The best advice you could get would be from a dentist.

However i will say YES to treatable as i used to have it. Sore gums
Bleeding gum
Sensertive Gums (cant spell it)
etc etc etc.

Your dentist will advice you on the BEST treatment for YOU. There are many antibiotic mouth washes you can buy which help treats gum disease aswel as toothpastes. I personally used my OWN found treatment, I just brought myself a small bottle of pure essential Clove Oil and mixed 4 drops of it into a small glass of water and washed my mouth out with it once in the morning and at night just before bed. I would clean my teeth first with a sensodine toothpaste. If you decide to use my techinque PLEASE DONT SWALLOW. Just wash around your mouth, gaggle and then spit it out. Clove Oil is an antiseptic and an inflammatory oil.

It MUST be pure essential oil though and the only way you can be sure of buying pure oil is buy it from your health shop. It will be sold in a small / dark bottle and will say on it, pure essential oil. You will need to keep the oil out of sunlight and in its orginal container.

I had this problem last year. I kept using the oil mixed in water for approx 2 to 3 weeks. Not had any more problems since.

But remember even if it worked for me it doesnt mean it WILL work for you. You may need to shop about but theres no harm in trying it mate.

Best of luck

Gum disease breaks down the alveolar bone that suspends the teeth, once the bone is lost it will not grow back but with the help of the dentist it can brought under control and the process slowed down. Treatment normally consists of thorough cleaning sometimes surgically, regular maintenance cleans with the hygienist and sometimes depending on the case long term antibiotic use.

It is definitely treatable. One of the common treatments dentists offer is a course of Corsodyl mouthwash which you can buy from the chemists or have prescribed for you if you get free prescriptions. The damage can include receding gums which I am pretty sure don't grow back but they wont worsen if you do the treatment programme. Of course, your dentist will tell you more if you can summon up the courage to visit...
