phones here in Italy are so cheap now a days, that you can find a Nokia with a prepaid SIM card for only about 30€. If not, buy a SIM card, to call within Italy WIND provider is the best, ask for the "Noi Italy" Plan. (no-ee Italy) TIM provider is the main provider but is also the most expensive. Then to follow Vodafone, and 3 but 3 provides a 3g UM-TS service better than anyone. To call from Italy to the us, I suggest you buy while in Italy a "Columbus" Card, you can find it almost anywhere it has the best rates for calling the US.

If you have a GSM mobile phone, you just have to get into one of the many mobile stores all over italy and purchase a sim card, it is usually free if you are paying only for a certain amount of prepaid calls.

You can consult any of the main 4-5 providers in italy. Wind.it for instance, but maybe “3” has better deals to call abroad.

I have lived in taly, best deals with vodafone, when you are in the shop tell the assistant your intention because they give you a special mobile plan to call US without lose $$$$$$$$$$$$$,
because if you don't specify the will give you a normal Mobile plan and you waste a lot of $$$ everytime the call you and when you call back....
hope this helps.
