ubuntu and kubuntu are very good. Kubuntu is based on kde desktop and more user firendly for windows users.

Whatever you use, I recommend that you first get those live cd version. So that you can try them before installing by just booting from cd. it will not change anything in your pc.
First try a few and then whichever you like, you can install it.

A blue screen doesn't mean your harddrive is dead, just means Windows 9x crashed...a very common occurance.

Everybody has a different preference when it comes to linux. Personally, I like the slackware family. Ubuntu and openSuSE are very popular ones. Redhat Fedora Core is still considered the the choice of the Linux developer.

If you have never used Linux before, a "Windows Replacement" linux is probably the best choice. They are designed to be easy to use by regular computer users familiar with linux...and the installers are a lot easier. Linspire/Freespire and XandrOS are probably the best of these introductory distros.

Probably, you are going to be trying lots of different distros...Linux users switch around a lot. So, you might want to partition your harddrive so you still have a basic Windows around to fall back on (if you can, get NT 4 or 2000 intead of 9x/ME).

Anyways, instead of giving the link to every distro I've mentioned, just go to this site. It has them all, with reviews:

RedHat is more tailored for people just starting Linux, i'd recommend that until you're familiar with the setup and usage of Linux.
Debian is hard to set up unless you know what you're doing, I tried it as my first and got stuck in the installation.

Knoppix is also a neat distrobution that you may want to try before switching over to Linux. It boots off of 1 CD so that you don't need to format your drives and install everything, it gives you a taste.
