Yes, it is possible, but you have to find a way to "teach" the voice recognition software to recognize the teacher's voice. It is not as simple and straight forward as it is presented in the cartoon.

Yes the technology to do this does exist but...

A. It's a little pricey and...

B. Voice recognition software is very fussy. Some require having the speaker enter carefully spoken samples of selected words first so that the software has a baseline of how the speaker pronounces certain letter combinations, and even after a speakers basline is entered the speaker has to enunciate clearly and speak in a consistent manner or the software will not recognize what the speaker is saying.

So it can be done but is it worth the expense and effort just to take notes?

It is possible, but the problem would be the microphone and all the background noise may not allow the main lecture to be picked up by the voice recognition software. Also, a lot of VR software needs to have a special sample of the voice to record and translate it into the computer correctly, especially if the class contains a specialized vocabulary that isn't recognized by the software.

i'm sure it's possible under ideal conditions. i doubt the recording in this setting would be of a high enough quality to work very well. the professor probably sounds like charlie brown's teacher when it's played back. her notes, in the end, would just be 'wah wah wah wah wah wah' so my answer is: possible-yes, practical-probably not

To a point...You would have to have a decent, well good, microphone and software like Dragon Naturally Speaking...
