I have been a veterinary technician for years, and a dog trainer and behavior modification specialst for 4 years. When I see dogs that are showing that kind of behavior, most of the time it signifies that the animal is not recieveing enough stimulation. You can view the behavior of your dog almost like a human child. When a child is not recieving enough attention or mental stimuli, the child will act out.
The dog is 11 years old, if he is in good physical health, he may just be bored. Has anything happened recently that would keep the owners out of the house more? New job? New baby? There are many things that could affect the dogs psyche. Have you strayed from regular activities with the dog?
Dogs need a schedule, it's hard for them to function when changes arouse. Try taking him for a walk at a particular time for a particular time. What ever works for you. If you have major worries about any type of geriatric mental issues with your dog, please consult your vet. good luck

You are right, it is not the dogs fault. We had the same problem with a dog which was by nature a barker. Some are and some aren't. To their credit the owners did seriously try but when they were not home the dogs barking just got too much. Someone complained to the local council. I don't know why no-one else has suggested this. People can be fined for pets becoming nuisances. In my case the people (who I stress are really nice neighbours) went to extraordinary efforts to control their pets behaviour with a lot of success. This dog is still a barker but it is not given a chance to become annoying anymore. So don't feel bad. Make a complaint. Anonymous if you like. The council will have to do something. Seriously, keep complaining untill they do.

Ok, taking him to dog training isn't going to help because his problems are at home, when he does things your not happy about you could try squirting him with water or shake a bottle with stones in and when he stops say good boy, Or if this dont work get a 1 to 1 dog trainer to come to your house but sometimes the dog does'ent play up when a trainer is there, you can find a 1 to 1 trainer if you go to a good training class but make sure they understand the exact problem before you get them to help. Hope this helps, good luck :)

Your dog may just either be looking for attention, or he may just want some more excitment in his doggy life because since he's older, he's bored. You may just buy him bones and toys to keep him busy, and play with him as if he's a puppy [since he acts like one]. Or...last resort is to get him a trainer, and you may want to teach him some tricks of your own.

This seems so easy to me, He is bored. Get a lead and take him for a long walk..every day. It is your responsibility to meet his need for physical exercise and mental stimulation.

I think he is senile!!! That is so sad, he is losing his little mind. Don't be too hard on him, remember, unconditional love. =0)
