Ah, a subject I know quite well. First and foremost, your tongue does have nerve endings for pain. Second, it also has receptors for taste, which CAN also feel things as well. Most tongue piercing are done by body shop experts who've had their tongues pierced and have pierced hundreds of other people's tongues. A good body shop will have you rinse your mouth with some seriously powerful(not painfully so) mouth sterilizer. Then they mark your tongue to see where you what the stud. Then, they take the needle,(yes, you CAN get a smaller or bigger one used on you if you like) as well as a piece of stopper. Usually cork that's a one time use job only. Before that, they take a set of hemostats(those clamp things they use during some surgeries) and clamp the part of your tongue where its going to be pierced. Finally, the Person makes sure all things are lined up, missing the blood vessels, and does the deed. Before they pull the needle out, they stick the top part of the barbell into the open top end of the needle and thread it through your tongue. Screw the bottom bell on, and your done. Avoid at all cost for the next 6 weeks anything with milk, alcohol, hot spices, and electricity! By the way, throughout all that, no, it won't hurt. that's why the hemostats are used. They prevent the pain. Cheers!

To be honest with you it all depends on the individual. I did mine when I was 14 for the first time and I liked it at first but it became very annoying to me after a while to have something in my mouth constantly. As for the pain- it's not bad until the next day when it gets all swollen and you won't be able to eat anything except maybe soup. Believe me everything hurts - even drinking a milkshake - for a few days. You must keep it clean or it can get really nasty! Also, make sure if you do get it done to get a big enough barbell for the swelling bc my cuz did it and his barbell got embedded into his tongue and it made a weird indentation and caused more pain. He liked his though and kept it but it does change your speech pattern a little bit especially right at first because of the swelling. I even did it twice after throughout the years and it just wasn't for me. I like the look but it's just so annoying to me. Kissing is not a big deal once the pain is gone; it's all the same. The pain isn't that bad though; it sucks but it's def. bearable. It'll last a few days and it also depends on how fast you heal too. Good luck!!!

If you really wanted it done, pain wouldn't matter.
Its a piercing, so you will feel something, but everyone is different, so no one can answer how it will feel for you; people speak only for themselves.
Often the most painful part of a tongue piercing is having a swollen tongue for the following days, having to readjust to talking and eating. People often experience prolonged pain that comes with oral complications, but those can be generally avoided with some care and common sense.

The more you think/worry/stress about it, the more it's going to hurt. I got mine done, and it hurt, but I have a short tongue (didn't know that until I went there) and I was wigging out. Be really careful about keeping it clean. And you really can't share saliva with anyone for as long as they say, trust me, it'll get infected.

My brother has his done and he says that it hurts after you get it done, like a couple of hours later. He says that when you first get it done, its like getting your ears pierced. Good luck!
