okay, first of all, 12 cats per household is not normal. 1 or 2 or even 3 is fine, but more than that and you may start to see behavioural problems. This is because cats are creatures of habit and too many can cause chaos.
I've had a cat in my life ever since I was 10 (I'm 29) and they are wonderful pets. Of course, you have to appreciate the personality of the cat. Cats tend to be mischievous and, for lack of a better word "catty"! :) but if you provide a clean cat litter, fresh food and water and plenty of toys when they're young and a warm comfy lap when older, they'll be in heaven. And nothing beats the sound of purring near your ear in the morning.

Cats, believe it or not are great companions for a long time in life. Once you get a cat you will create a powerful bond that will not be broken by anything, kind of like a strong friendship. Even though cats prefer to be alone sometimes they love human companionship from time to time. It can be noticed that this is true because cats are always around people so that people will -play with them and pet them.
p.s. cats are great for warming up your feet on a cold night.

Cats are great! Mine plays fetch just like a dog, only with small fuzzy mice toys instead of balls :) She's hilarious and very well tempered. They're very interactive-Cats let you know when they want lovin' or when they want to play, or when they just want to be left alone! Also, they are extremely clean & self sufficient. There is no potty training involved at all. And if you need to leave for a day or two, as long as they have food and water, they will take care of themselves- no pet sitter needed. They don't need to be walked- only played with, which is VERY fun for both of you! (i recommend a fishing pole feather string toy).

Plus they're just so darn cute.

Cons: Scratching could be a problem if you have nice furniture, but don't get them declawed!!! That's a very painful surgury for them that is outlawed in many countries (not the usa) for being inhumane.
Cleaning the litter box & messy litter is not fun.
Midnight crazies where the cat goes nuts playing in the middle of the night... mine actually brings me toys into the bed and wakes me up to play. luckily she's too cute to be mad at.

and... cats do not stink as someone said earlier. If you take proper care of your cat (clean the litter box, which takes a minute) there is NO smell. Cats keep themselves very clean. I live in a one bedroom apt - very small area w/ indoor cat. It's never stank b/c of the kitty!!!! Dogs (which I also love) are MUCH more smelly. Cats spend 8% - 15% of their waking lives cleaning themselves. ok... that is all.

Cats are lovely to have. All they require is feeding in the same place and roughly the same time, some water, clean litter (if necessary) and a little bit of attention. Otherwise, they are pretty independant. They will tell you if they want feeding and if they want to go outside.

They don't need constant attention or taking out for walks like dogs. And you don't need to follow them round with a poop-scoop if they go outside. Cats know how to go to the toilet properly. If you have patience, you can teach the cat to use the bathroom toilet if you'd rather not have them leave the house but thats up to you!

You do have to show a little discipline. I'm bullied by my cat. My parents showed discipline with her and she knows not to do wrong in front of them. However, she rules the roost whenever its just me and her - dives at me and everything! Which is one of the minor downsides to cats.

The question should be what benefits the cat? From the cat's perspective we are good for a few things like feeding on time, fresh water, clean litter boxes, scratching behind the ears and under the chin.Providing a puffy place to tiptoe on when the urge hits. But what benefits us you ask? The opportunity to have someone on top of the TV to monitor what stations you are watching with one paw, the chance to have to hold still all night so as not to wake up dear kitty on top of you resting peacefully, having a watch kitty ready to strike and pounce on anyone who dares to come in your door without prior approval! For those who do not like decision making, kitty is the answer to all prayers! Kitty will make all decisions! Kitty runs a tight ship in her house and will make all those around her shape up or ship out! Kitty is the answer to all who would not consider a loyal and loving and faithful dog. Kitty is independent and does not need your approval. In fact, kitty demands you get her approval! Kitty considers all canines inferior anyway and will not stoop to such low levels of behavior! Kitty is really the answer for all those suffering from a low IQ. Because of her highly developed intellect, she can be relied on to make the best decisions for her humans at all times! A feline is worth her weight in gold!!

I used to think about this question before i got my 2 cats!
Cats are companions they keep you company,
they are clean and don't depend on us all the time like dogs do
they are easily trained
when they purr you no they are happy
they are just loving animals and these i believe are the benefits of having cats!

Cats are very easy to take care of, they want affection when they want it and not all the time like dogs can do.
They can learn commands as mine has done and will come for a cuddle when i want one.
They are so much less hasstle then dogs i know i have two dogs and two cats who all get along really well.

imo the benefits of owning a cat is stress relief. It has been a proven study that if you pet an animal with fur once a day it decreases your stress. Companionship is another good benefit.

Cuddles!

I've been all stressed out the past month or so and last night I crashed out on the couch. My kitten climbed up on me, kneaded my chest, purred, licked my hand (its not just dogs that do that to show affection!), then curled up against me with her head on my forearm, and we took a nap. It was soooooo comforting.

They are very low maintenance - don't need to be washed or picked up after - but still make good companions. And they are good for hours of entertainment. Just watching them go crazy with a ping pong ball or a bit of random fluff can be so funny!

Easy to answer, constant companionship, friendly face always pleased to see you no matter how bad you day has been. Playful and also snuggly for those nights when everybody you now is busy your cat will always clear it's schedule and cuddle up. After 17 years with my moggy could't face the day without him..
