am baptising a baby on Sunday who is called Joshua and I want to say something about the name. To save time (I'm also writing the sermon at the moment) I wondered if anyone out there could look it up for me. Thanks,

Alan h - i was trying to save time on the details - I do know it's the same really, just tired and running out of time - Christmas is coming , you may have noticed - and I have done several infant baptsims but in the hussle and bussle of parish life I forget a few details of the biblical studies i did and continue to do. I was just trying to save time in looking it up so I didnt publicly make a mistake.

Yeshua is the original Hebrew proper name for Jesus of Nazareth, a Jewish Rabbi (and more) who lived from about 6 B.C.E. to 27 C.E. (A.D.) In other words, Yeshua was the name His mother called Him when shall called Him for supper.

Joshua means Jehweh is Salvation and Jesus is a derivation of Joshua--remember the OT nd NT were written in different languages.
Joshua was the successor of Moses and led the people of Israel into the promised land--Canaan. Jesus, in the same way, is a successor to the Mosaic law and leads us into eternal life with God in Heaven through His death on the cross for our sins.

Jesus is the English transliteration of the Greek word Iesous. Iesous is the Greek transliteration of the Hebrew Yeshua (or in English Joshua).
So it is the same root, it just had to go through a few hoops to get there.

joshua is not a form of the name Jesus, but Yeshua is. Joshua is the brave guy in the Old testament who took over after Moses. good luck with your sermon.

Being a good Jewish name, Joshua is the English form of Yehoshuah and its late Biblical variant Yeshua. If Jesus actually existed, his mama (Miriam bat Yoachim v'Hannah) would have named him one of those.
