Which way? I think what you want to do is cover the bottom of a saucepan with a thin layer of oil, and put in enough popcorn to basically layer the bottom of the pan with kernels, but no depth---only a single layer of kernels. You'll have to jiggle the pan constantly once the oil is hot (you'll know when the first kernel pops), to keep the popped corn from sticking and burning, so the level of heat is in your hands as much as on the stovetop. You can crank it up to medium-high to high heat. You may have a minor misadventure, but you'll catch on quickly to the feel of the thing. I learned to do this when I was quite young, using a stepstool to get up to the stovetop level. (The wisdom of allowing me to do so is a different subject.)

Put a small amount of oil (a couple tbsp.) in the bottom of the pan. Put in a half cup or so of popcorn, cover the pot, and turn the heat on high. Keep the pot moving constanly (back and forth on the burner), and popcorn will eventually start popping. Continue until the pot is full or the popcorn stops popping. Using oil also allows you to better season the popcorn afterwards.
Edit- Man these people are quick!

If you dont have a popcorn maker, the best thing to do would be to get yourself a pot. put a small amount of oil or real butter in first, I would say no more than a tablespoon. Then put it on the stove and heat it until it is melted or hot...While you are waiting, you can measure out 1/3 cup popcorn kernels. When the oil or butter is ready...dump the popcorn in. You are going to want to put a lid on the top of the pot, turn the heat down to medium and then shake the pot in a circular motion. The popcorn will eventually start popping. When the popping slows down, turn the heat off. There you go!! Fresh popped popcorn! It tastes yummy this way too.

I just cook popcorn using a stove and a pot with cover.I mix oil and butter so as to keep the butter fromburning...then add about 2-3 tablespoons of popcorn.I coat the popcorn well first to have all popped ones. Then i heat it at almost high...just making sure i bring it up on the first popping sound. Then about 4 inches above the fire i sway it making circles above putting it nearer the fire occasionally until no more popping sounds.Put off the foire and let it stand for a minute or two before opening.I season with salt and a bit of msg which is optional.Great popcorn taste the way we used to have it.

Take a large pan with a good lid with a handle on the top. Put pan on high heat. Add 2 Tbls. butter or oil, and then add about a cup of popcorn. You will just have to work with it and figure it out. put the lid on and scoot the pan back and forth, holding the handle on the pan and the handle on the lid.keep shaking back and forth and soon you will here popping keep shaking till you hear no more popping and then take off the burner pour into a large bowl or large pape sack. Melt butter and drizzle on popcorn or just add salt. This is the way my mother taught me how to make popcorn and it is so much better than microwave popcorn. A good gadget for poping corn is an air popper they sale them at Wal-Mart. for like 20 buck. Happy popping!

You use a big pot with a lid. My Dad does it this way.
He puts a small amount of oil and butter/margarine in the bottom of the pan and lets it get sizzling hot, (ON HIGH HEAT) you then add the dry popcorn kernels and then in a few seconds they will begin to cook, then once you see the first one pop, put the lid on it and let it continue to cook on the high heat until the popping sound slows down. Remove the pot from the heat and dump the popcorn in a bowl. You can add salt and extra butter if you like. Enjoy!

Cover the bottom of your heavy, lidded pot with canola oil and put on high heat.
When it is heated nearly to smoking, add 1/2 cup of popcorn kernels. Cover quickly.
Reduce the heat to medium. Shake the pot occasionally. When the popping slows to about 5 second between pops, remove from the heat.
(Tricky people will dump their popcorn into a colander and gice it a shake to remove unpopped kernels.
Salt, butter, whatever you like (parmesan cheese and garlic salt for me).
Enjoy!
Best wishes!

I think you just coat the bottom of the pan with oil and use about a cup of popcorn put a lid on and move it back and forth over the heat. That should get you a nice bowl of popcorn.

use just enough oil to cover the bottom of the pot. 1/ 4th cup should do it. put in a cup of popcorn, turn the heat to high, make sure a cover is on the pot, and when you don't hear any more kernels popping then its done.

I use my tallest revere ware pot and lid. Cover the bottom with veg oil and then add popcorn to cover the bottom of the pan. I use high heat and shake vigorously until popping stops. Pour it into a bowl and melt butter in the hot pan.
