Jesus thought highly of the widow who threw her last two cents into the Temple treasury. And he did suggest to an earnest young man that he sell all he have and give the money to the poor (not the church, interestingly). Perhaps a calculator is not the best way to decide. And remember, there is currency other than money. You may have time and talent you can contribute. Give until you feel a little uncomfortable, and don't put it all in one place.

It is in the bible. I remember a New Testement story of Jesus sitting in the temple watching people bring in their offerings. A rich man came in a placed in a great number of coins, a tiny portion of the profit from his wealth. A poor widow came in and placed a few coins, all she had in the box. Jesus said that her offering, her tithe, meant more because she did not hold back.
It is advised that you tithe 10% of your income throughout the year. So, if you earn an income of $100, you tithe $10 for the year. Yes, I know that's a low number, but I don't feel like doing a lot of math. People on Sunday normally put in only a buck when the basket comes around if they have money to put in. No one is going to watch you and denounce you if you don't put money in the basket.
Tithing helps out the church, helps pay for the people who work there and the repairs and maintance costs. My church had to expand their parking lot because we grew and the money earned through collection went towards that. We also have a debt to the Diasces that we have to pay off. For every dollar donated in the collection, I think it was 50% went to our debt and maintance and all but 1% went to paying the workers of the church. That one percent left was split among the priests as their salary.
While people complain about tithing, it is not demanded but recommended. I can recommend anything, but you have no obligation to follow what I say.

Hi yummygood. The Bible in the New Testament does not tell us we are to tithe, but the Bible does tell us what we are to give to God. We read in Romans 12:1:
"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, Holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service."
In other words, God wants everything we have, even our bodies. This is very different from Genesis 28:22 where after Jacob had a dream he placed a stone to represent a house for God and declares:
"...and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee."
For the True Believer tithing is just a good starting point. In Luke 6:38, we are told to give and it shall be given back to you. Is this money that God is talking about? Many people think so, but its not. We are to share the Gospel and God will give us Spiritual Blessings back. This is far more important then receiving money or material wealth as a payment from God.
But can we be a Christian and not tithe?' Yes you can.Do I tithe? Yes I do. Is giving money to charities the same as tithing? No. Giving to charities is not the same as spreading the Gospel.
But if a person does decide to give money to God do so with a cheerful heart and not grudgingly. If you are giving such a large portion of your income to God that it makes you resentful, it better not to give at all, or maybe you should cut back the amount you give. God tells us in 2 Corinthians 9:7:
"So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver."
We want to faithfully give all of ourselves to sending out the Gospel. This is the mindset of the True Child of God.

When you consider that the pattern in Acts was for people to share everything they had, sell their land and lay the money at the apostles feet, and own nothing, you might realize that the 10% rule is not so bad.
Besides, who told you the OT doesn't count? Jesus said He didn't come to abolish the old covenant, but to fulfill it.

There is a verse about supporting the Pastor and church... I need to go look for it- Be right back-
Ok I am still looking, in fact I just read about this a month ago in the Bible....about how we are to support our church and Pastor.
I found one! 1 Timothy 5:17-18
17The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. 18For the Scripture says, "Do not muzzle the ox while it is treading out the grain,"[a] and "The worker deserves his wages."[

Paul told his disciples to "lay up in store" their tithe money over the week so he could pick it up next time he came around. People in the New Testament still tithed. In fact, that money was used to run churches and feed the poor. We will always have the poor with us.

If you Love the Lord you must accept His entire word and not just bits and pieces of it.
Mark 8:38 Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.
I do not agree with your feelings about tithing. If it wasn't for God blessing us with everything we have in life, we would not have anything at all. Ten percent back to Him is nothing compared to what He give us every day of our life, starting with the gift of life it'self, and you cann't put a price tag on that.
When you tithe, you are not tithing to the church, but to God Himself, and the elders of the church are entrusted with that money to carry on the work of God. Place your thoughts in the spirit and away from man's outlook on this topic.
I wasn't saved in church but on a street corner when I was 11 years old, and that has absolutely no baring on tithing in Chruch.
The entire bible was the divine inspriation of God. The Old Testiment as well as the New Testiment. The word of God is the truth, and God is the author of that truth. Satan is the author of confusion and that is satan messing with your throughts here.

Give to God what is God's and give to Caesar what is Caesar's.
God technically owns it all, we are simply stewards. He did ask for our 10% in the OT, and I believe that still applies. The OT is not completely nullified by the NT. It is fulfilled in the part of our sin atonement. The cleanliness laws are gone, but the principles are all still in effect. God doesn't change.
God says if we don't tithe, our money is under a curse and vice versa. He says to test Him in this and see if He doesn't open up the storehouses of heaven. I personally find that when I tithe, the rest of my money seems to extend further, and when I don't, I have trouble meeting my obligations. I think that shows it still applies.
Mal 3:8 "Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me.
"But you ask, 'How do we rob you?'
"In tithes and offerings. 9 You are under a curse—the whole nation of you—because you are robbing me. 10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. 11 I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not cast their fruit," says the LORD Almighty.

Tithing will open the windows of heaven, blessings will be poured out to the point that there will be no room to receive them.
I pay 10% of all i make, when you think about it the money you make is only there because God made it, so really you are just returning some of what you got from him.
