My son's brthday is on Sept. 27th and he had to wait an extra year. He turned 6 right after he started kindergarden.
Having them wait is not such a bad idea. He or She will be more developed than the other kids in his or her grade and they should do extremely well in school. If you start him or her earlier then they may fall behind the other kids. My son is doing very well in school.
Just my advice....

It depends on where you live. Here, the cutoff is December 1 or December 31, depending on the district. I did a lot of research before sending my daughter to kindergarten this year. She has a November birthday and I wasn't sure if I should send her or not. Her father lives in another state where the cutoff is September 1. As an educator, I believe the cutoff should be September 1, or the first day of school. However, I didn't want to leave my daughter back for no good reason. (Thankfully she is not delayed socially or cognitively.) Anyway, I'd wait and see because cutoff dates are changing like the wind across the country. By the time your baby is born it may have changed. I think the advantage to being the oldest in the class is wonderful and if you can do that, keep it that way and don't advance him/her just for the sake of doing it. Good luck!

My school district's cut off date is Dec. 1st and my daughter was born on Dec. 3rd.She would have been a year behind because of 2 days, but I sent her to a private school for kindergarten and then transferred her to public shool in first grade. As long as the private school is accredited by the state, your public school has to accept the transfer. Call your school district to find out the exact cut off date before you worry too much! Best of luck!

seems a bit silly to be asking a question 5 years from when you actually need to know, but whatever. Many schools here will extend the age if the kids went to and had good progress in pre school.
