Start with an observation of your surroundings maybe, and lead in to other questions. Mentioning something around you, like an interesting tree or something and then just starting to chat, asking questions and things, is often easier than just introducing yourself.
Good luck :)

It can be easier to 'practice' talking to people just in general, as opposed to just people you fancy. Try talking to old ladies - they are lovely to chat to - this will get your confidence up about striking up conversations.

It gets easier the more you do it, practice, practice, practice!
