Ol' Roy is that good?

Ol'Roy is one of the worst foods out there. It makes even Science Diet look high quality, and Science Diet is even full nasties.

Switch to a high quality food. Your pup will thank you for it.

Nothing you find at a grocery store is going to be a good food. High quality foods can be found at large pet store chains, or online. A couple of foods I like are Nutro Natural, Innova, and Cannidae.

There are other high quality dog foods. Here's how to spot them:

A high quality food will have little or no fillers such as corn, wheat or soy. These aren't very digestable for dogs, and are common food related allergens. Since you were seeing corn meal in the first few ingredients, those are not high quality foods. Foods list ingredients by content, with the ingredient it contains most of at the top.

A high quality food will not contain BHT, BHA or Ethoxyquin, these are all chemical preservatives that have been linked to cancer.

A high quality food will not contain by-products of any kind. Meat meals are ok as long as the source of the meat is listed, such as Chicken Meal.

A high quality diet should have meat as at least the first ingredient., and be made from human grade ingredients. Foods that don't use human grade ingredients often get their ingredients from less than desirable sources, such as meat from animals that were diseased, or euthanized.

There is another diet option other than dog food. Some people choose to feed a raw diet. This involves feeding the dog raw meaty bones and organ meat. However it is not as simple as throwing a couple chicken bones in a bowl everyday. If you wish to feed this type of diet, do lots and lots of research first. Switching to this diet without knowing what your doing can lead to nutritional problems for your dog. I'll give you some links as a starting point in research if you are interested in this type of diet.

No, it's not good. Your dog might do fine on it, but it is like feeding a child a diet of spam, hotdogs, mystery meat. Since many people feed their children lots of junkfoods and sweets, children are becoming type two diabetics at alarming rates. So food does affect health. If you need to go with a cheaper food for financial reasons, pick a non-gravy commercial type like Purina Dog Chow.
It's at least better than Ol Roy and generic supermarket foods.
If finances aren't a problem there are many healthier foods on the market. Look for foods that don't have BHT or BHA for preservatives and which don't have added soy, peanut hulls etc for filler and fiber.
Some good brands: Authority line of dog food (available in PetSmart stores and median priced but very good quality) especially the Harvest Baked one., Nature's Recipe, Innova, Eukanuba has an excellent puppy food for large breed puppy with glucosamine and chondroitin, Royal Canin, Flint River Ranch, Dick Van Patten Dog foods, these are to name a few of the high quality foods available. I don't like Nutro since they started adding soy to their dog foods. I have heard their "Ultra" line of food is good but what i don't like about that brand of food is that the kibble is very hard and my dogs would throw it up a lot.
It doesn't digest well.

Ol'Roy is one of the worst foods that you could give a dog. Once a Vet tried to get in touch with the makers to see what they put into the food, and they could never give her a straight answer on any of the products. Also, don't use Sunshine, or Store Brand foods. And as for the Diamond. That food has been know to cause dogs to become seriously ill, and even death. You want to try to feed a National Brand dog food. It doesn't have to be the most expensive. You can use brands like Purina, Iams, and Pedigree.

The first few ingredients should be some type of meat or meats. Avoid foods that have corn in the first few ingredients. Wheat is a common allergen in dogs so you may want to avoid that also. Soy and by-products aren't something you want in the ingredient list either.

I feed my dogs Natural Balance, expensive, but worth it.

That is possibly the worst food out there. I would recommend Purina One. It is what I feed my dogs and cats. It is about the best dog food you can get at Walmart. It is a little more expensive than other walmart dog foods but is much healthier. The best dog foods are Science Diet, Eukanuba, and iams. Nutro is also a very good dog food. But these are all kind of expensive, so thats why I feed mine Purina ONE. It is a good quality food and inexpensive as compared to Science diet, etc.

That is one of the worst foods you can buy! It has some of the same ingredients as in the stuff vets use to put animals to sleep! Use Eukanuba, go to their website to find a place to get it. By the way, what kind of dog is it? Boy or girl?

It's not the best, but it certainly isn't awful. I feed Diamond brand to all my dogs. It is available at feed stores and costs about 50 cents per pound. Diamond was in the news last year because of a bad batch of dog food, but they fixed the problem and continue to produce great food at great prices.

In comparison to other foods and their ingredients, Ol'Roy is at the bottom of the list.

That is one of the worst dog foods on the market. It's full of corn, animal byproducts (which can be ANY animal, including euthanized pets and zoo animals, beaks, feathers, feet, you name it), and nasty, nasty chemicals.
