-Clean up toys
-Help mom fold laundry (roll socks, fold towels, just easy stuff)
-Help mom dry and put away dishes/help mom load the dishwasher
-Water indoor plants
-Make sure pets have food & water
-Help mom set the table for dinner
-Make sure his dirty clothes go in the hamper

Of course, I wouldn't recommend giving him ALL of those but you can pick and choose from that list :-)

when mine were 5 they
fed the animals
put clothes in the washing machine
cleaned up toys
set the table
put dishes in the sink
put out the rubbish
bought in the bins(ours are on wheels very easy to move when empty)
got the letters from the letterbox
when in the bath they liked to clean the bath(I never asked it was just something they did)
helped clean up the back yard before I did the mowing
Five year olds are pretty capable. Set a chore and watch to see if they struggle. A little struggling is ok but you will soon realise if they can do it or not.

Well my son is six now and does the same chores he did when he was 5. They are: pick up and put away toys, books, make bed.
put away his clean prefolded laundry, sometimes he dusts the living room or his room. He puts his plate in the sink after meals. It may seem like a lot but he can do it with the help of a reward chart.

I live with a 5yo girl and we have her collect all the little trash cans around the house and put them in the main garbage can. She's not strong enuf to take the big one outside, but she's totally good at collecting the little ones and relining the cans.
Also she puts away the silverware in the dishwasher while her big sis does the other dishes. Be careful of knives though.
Picking up stuff from the living areas, straightening pillows on the couch. ....

My son has been doing chores for about 2 yrs now. He's going to be 6 in April~ He helps unload the dishwasher, puts away dirty clothes, feeds the cats, cleans his room BEFORE going to bed or outside to play..and helps me with his almost 3 yr old brother who also helps do these chores!

Tidy his room. Keep his toys and other belongings put where they belong. Seperate the recycling(not the glass of course, but the paper and plastic.) Feed and water any pets, dust furniture, make his bed. Just remember that he is five. Don't expect perfection. I have friend that makes her kids read a book of their choice for 30 minutes everyday. If they are too young to read, she has them do coloring in books or recite the alphabet and/or count as high as they can.

Make sure he knows you appreciate his efforts and reward him somehow for a job well done.

Keeping his toys neat and tidy
Make his bed (bear in mind, it won't be perfect)
Help with dishes or load / unload dishwasher
Help sort clothes to do laundry
Dusting

These are some of the things my kids did at that age. We tried to make most of these things fun chores and work together at them.

My little brother his five. His chores are to help set the table for dinner, keep his toys picked up, and to sweep the floor three times a week. If he likes, he can help my older brother unload the dishwasher (and he usually unloads it all by himself...)

Help take out the garbage, clean his room , make his bed, tidy up toys, help shoveling snow, can help with laundry (seperating the clothes) as well as putting his own clothes away. these are all the things my daughter could do at that age and still does ( although much better now) 3 years later.

i'm also a unmarried mom with a son so i visit narrate. I recommend initiating with small initiatives alongside with figuring out on up toys and garments in his mattress room. you need to pretend the trash can or laundry basket is a basketball hoop. He earns factors for throwing each and every thing in interior of a particular era of time. advantages him with a deal with after this manner of excellent type of issues. progressively boost the quantities and forms of chores as he receives older. I at the moment have my 9 12 months old son on the dish washing agenda inclusive of his massive sister, he places his clothing contained in the washer (I initiate it), he cleans the rest room (the rest room is his admired), and he sweeps the floor. He needs to practice dinner so i will coach him a thanks to attempt this too. they're in no way too youthful to initiate gaining expertise of.

make bed daily. It doesn't have to be perfect but he should be able to put the sheet and blanket and pillow on the bed before he leaves for school/daycare in the morning. Help pick up the house. Help fold laundry. dust. and then reward him once about once a week for helping out around the house
