When i first got my dog (he is a dachshund) every time after we play, i take him out and tell him to go pee.. and when he wakes up i take him out right away, & definitely 15-20 mins. after he eats his meal. And i bought him also puppy pads and when i feel like his getting ready to pee i will rush and put the pads under him and in the long run he will learn that that's where he can pee when i don't take him out.
Beacuse dog's are creature of habits soon enough when you consistently take him out after he play, sleeps, eat he will start asking you himself. My dog will scratch the door when he wants to go & do his business. And he never did it inside our home.

Emmit, I just got a 6 week old yellow lab. I already have a 2 year old lab I got at 5 weeks. You have to establish a routine with the dog as quickly as possible. Use your leash. Here is what I do with Clue and did with Briscoe.
Every morning I put them on the leash and take them outside to walk around a little then I give the command go potty. When the dog finally goes potty I praise him really loud and rub him and keep saying GOOD POTTY! Then I feed them and let them run around for a little bit. About 30 minutes after feeding and watering I take them for another potty and do the same thing over again. Every two hours for atleast the first 2 weeks or so I take them potty and keep repeating it. In the evening between 5-7 I feed them again and repeat the morning schedule. By one hour before I am ready for bed I refuse any more water while they are under 12-24 weeks or until they are holding their bladder for about 6 hours. Just before bed we do the leash and potty thing again. Also, remember when we had Bria we kept her in a kennel for about 2 or so months until she was completely not using it in her kennel and then we house trained her and she could just be out. Briscoe my 2 year old can hold it for 12 hours now and Clue only 6 weeks only holds it for 2 hours. Next week I'll be working to increase his hours. He does not get to run around the house freely yet because he is not house trained. This will keep the house from smelling like pee and enforce when and where to go potty. If the kids play with the puppy asign an area they play with it and only there and when done put the puppy back in the kennel. This will teach the puppy being in the house is for play time but not potty time and that there are rules to being out. Now, know that the nature of a chi is aggressive and rebellious so you have your work cut out for you. But if you are firm just like with a child and come up with corrections and use a firm strong voice when displeased it will work out. You have to catch them and yell loudly when they are about to squat on your carpet and remember how we would rub thier noses in the mistake and repeat a strong no over and over. Then take them to the door scratch it say outside and take them out. When done, put them back in the kennel so they learn when they mess up like that they lose the trust to be out and about. It will work out.

take it on the leash out side every hour and before+after everything, eventually the puppy will associate the door you go out of with releiving itself and will alert you and go to the door when it has to go. Good luck! Also, if this doesn't work than borrow The Complete Dog Book from your library, and consult the 'housebreaking' section. The AKC is quite reliable.

My dog would go to the back door and wait....then pee on the floor. The back door was in the basement and I have a walkout to the back yard. I never knew she needed to go, I would just notice that she disappeared. I caught her in the act one day and let her out quickly.
I had to keep an eye on her for a few days. When I noticed her at the door, I would make her bark by giving the command and pretending to bark too. As soon as she barked, I praised her and let he outside. Now she always gives a warning bark when she needs to go out.
Good Luck =0)

With a pup, each time it finishes eating. also each time you catch it going indoors. you don't rub its nose in it because this will only make the pup think that it is bad to go at all and it will start to hide where it goes at.(under the bed etc.) When you find it inside clean it well and spray an odor neutralizer this will help to keep it from returning to the same place next time. If you will take it's little presents out and place them where you wish the pup to go, it will make the connection very quickly.

just make sure you take it out every 1-2 hours to give it the opportunity to go to the bathroom. make sure you make the dog walk there by itself on a leash or something. this way the dog knows where its going to the bathroom at because it has walked there. if you carry it, some pups get confused as to where to go. every time you walk through the door to take it out ring a little bell. and then put a bell within reach of the dog. the dog will learn to ring the bell so you will let it out.

when you see your puppy needs the loo you can take it outside and each time it goes outside with you give your puppy a treat. going to the toilet is a natural instinct and so if they pee in the house don't shout your head of at them (even though i know how irritating it is) but tell them off in a strong deep voice and say something like ' bad boy/girl ' that's it if you go telling them that if they pee in the house again then you'll smack them hard and get rid of them they will feel hurt, neglected and not understand as long as you say it in a calm voice then you will be fine.

Hang a bell off of the doorknob on the door you take your puppy in and out of. Each time you take the dog out to go potty, ring the bell. The puppy will catch on that ringing the bell is for going potty and she will start to ring the bell herself when she wants to go out.

When my dog was just a puppy she used to always do her business in the house. Sometimes you know when they're going because they start sniffing around (well mine did anyway) I used to put her outside when she was about to go. But if yours isn't like that then u should stick her nose in it and put her outside .( i know it sounds cruel but it does work!!!!!!
