Friends of mine recently lost a *very* special pet to them last week. I have been putting off the phone call for lack of knowing what to say. I have no idea how to go about that conversation. Just saying "sorry for your loss" seems too impersonal. What's a good way to start the conversation and ease into offering my condolences?

Well, you can be honest, and tell your friend that you didn't call sooner because you didn't know what to say to them about losing losing Fido and that you're very sorry. Then ask how they are doing and ask if there's anything you can do.

Send an e-card and then call. Tell them, "Hey, I heard about (pet's name) passing away and I just wanted to offer my condolences. I just wanted you to know to that I was thinking about you". A card is a good intro and takes away some of the awkwardness. Good Luck!

A handwritten card is always best, but a phone call still works. I wouldn't worry about how to begin the conversation. It will happen.

You can always begin by saying, "I don't know what to say, but I heard that your pet died and wanted to call and see how you're doing." It's definitely the thought that counts. To connect with someone is never impersonal.

try to be as normal as possible and say youre sorry to hear about the loss of their pet. if your friend then wants to talk about it he/she will and if there not ready then they will still appreciate your sympathy. by saying it as simple as you can helps both you and your friend.

I had a similar situation, and called them and said, "I heard about Spinny. I am so sorry. Do you want to talk about it, or would another time be better?"
