An alcoholic is someone who is addicted to alcohol. Like any other drug addiction an alcoholic feels that they need alcohol to be content. Alcoholism is an actual disease too, alcoholics actually have a chemical dependency on the alcohol and can die if they completely stop alcohol consumption immediately.

There are people who have a physical addiction to Alcohol and there are people who are functioning alcoholics. But the AA definition of an Alcoholic is someone who has a problem with alcohol be it physical or emotional and cannot stop drinking. Check out AA online for more info. Good Luck!!!!

I believe an alcoholic isn't about how much you drink but why you drink. If you are drinking to numb your feelings, to deal with every day life be it good or bad. This is not to say that these same drinkers are only having a beer or two. Most of them drink excessively, get DUI's, neglect their children, go into debt, go to jail, etc. There are also "functioning alcoholics"- those you can go to work and maintain their lives to some degree. There are those who are binge drinkers- people who can go for periods of time without or they can control it for a time and then have moments where they do nothing but drink.

The definition of an alcoholic:
We alcoholics are men and women who have lost the ability to control our drinking. Some of us can stop drinking but cannot stay stopped. We have negative effects of our drinking.
DUI'S, relationship problems, health problems, financial problems, back problems ( people on our backs about our drinking) but we still drink. We are powerless over our drinking. If you feel you have a problem, go to an AA meeting there are meetings in every town. You do not have to say anything at the meeting, just listen.

You should go to "OPEN" AA meetings and you can get a better answer there than you will here.OPEN A meeting mean that the meeting is for anybody. Not just alcholics. Alot of doctors and other professionals go there to get answers to alcohol problems.

The textbook definition is someone who knows that their drinking will produce negative effects on their life, but still drinks anyway. This could be someone who drinks all the time, or someone who drinks once a month.
