Directly behind the shutter button on the top of the camera is the timer button. There's two there, it's the one on the left towards the flash.
Turn the camera on
Press the timer button once and it will go straight on to timer mode.
Press it again and it goes on to remote mode with timer
Press it again and it goes to remote mode with no timer delay
Press it again and it returns to shooting via shutter button

To vary the self timer time, press the menu button
Scroll down the left hand side until the little pencil symbol is selected, press the right arrow and scroll down to self timer (number 19)
From there you will be able to select from 2, 5, 10 & 20 seconds.

Hope this helps.

teef_au is exactly correct, but I'll add two cents. Vote his answer as the best.

The timer button has a little picture of (duh) a timer on it. It looks like a clock counting down. Nikon suggests putting a cover over the eyepiece so that stray light will not affect your exposure. I think this only matters if it's really critical, as I never do it and I can't complain about my exposures.

You may have your menu system setup to simple mode. See page 69 in your manual, "CSM/Setup". In the simple mode, many menu items do not show.
